Just hard overhead lights, a low ceiling, concrete walls, floorboards shaking under the stomp of a close, impatient crowd, and the ring sitting in the center of the room like an examination table.

The sound grows heavier as the camera moves toward the ring.
Beside the entranceway, the four tournament standings are displayed on the Academy screen.
At ringside, Paul Redford sits behind the commentary desk with the previous four weeks of evaluation reports arranged in front of him.
Beside him, Dave “The Brute” Kent studies the standings with his arms folded.
The camera settles on the commentators.
Paul Redford: “Welcome to Iron Ring: The Crucible. We are live from the Iron Ring Academy on August 6, 2026, and tonight the Quarter Three evaluation tournaments enter their fifth week.”
Dave Kent: “Which means the comfortable part is over.”
Paul Redford: “Was any part of this tournament comfortable?”
Dave Kent: “The first week was comfortable compared to this. In the first week, everyone could call a mistake an adjustment opportunity. Now the standings remember the mistake, the opponents have studied it, and the schedule is beginning to run out.”
The screen beside the entranceway changes.

Owen Starling lands the Scoop Slam Piledriver during the first minute.
The replay advances.
Dante Rook answers with two Powerbombs, reverses the repeated lift into the Rook’s Pivot, and finishes with the Elbow Drop.
Paul Redford: “Last week began with a direct confrontation between two unbeaten leaders of the Iron General Hammer Block.”
Dave Kent: “It ended with one leader.”

Paul Redford: “Dante Rook defeated Owen Starling at the six-minute mark and became the first man in the block to reach four points.”
Dave Kent: “Dante did not merely defeat Owen. He removed every condition Owen needed. No extended struggle. No emotional comeback. No time for the audience to carry him. Dante attacked the back, recognized the repeated Scoop Slam entry, and finished with the move that was available.”
Paul Redford: “The Elbow Drop rather than the Checkmate Driver.”
Dave Kent: “Because the tournament does not award style points for using the move printed beside the word ‘finisher.’ Owen was ready. Dante covered him properly. That is judgment.”

Paul Redford: “She neutralized several of Santelina’s preferred openings, survived the most dangerous submission sequence of the match, and remained aware when the final opportunity appeared.”
Dave Kent: “That is visible development. Not vague potential. Not encouragement. Evidence. Beatrice faced pressure, corrected what had been missing, and turned one point into three.”
The image freezes on the new Iron Maiden Hammer Block leader.
The footage changes again.
Kryst Fellwinter targets the left arm of Finn Oakheart.
The Cross Armbreaker tightens.

Finn drives Kryst down with the Running Powerbomb.

Kryst uses the damaged arm to escape the Side Headlock and throws Finn through the ropes.
The referee reaches ten.
Paul Redford: “Kryst Fellwinter earned his first block victory when Finn Oakheart failed to return before the count of ten.”
Dave Kent: “Finn corrected several of the problems discussed during his spotlight. His covers were more disciplined. He recognized when Kryst was attacking the arm. He attempted to stay attached after the Powerbomb.”
Paul Redford: “But the damaged arm failed when he attempted to pull himself onto the apron.”
Dave Kent: “And Kryst understood that winning did not require another submission. He needed Finn outside the ring for ten seconds. That was enough.”
The screen shows Finn extending his right hand after the match.
Kryst accepts it.
Paul Redford: “Finn accepted the result.”
Dave Kent: “Character is not the question. Results are. Finn has now lost by submission and countout. He has two block matches remaining and no points.”

Dave Kent: “Bella controlled much of the closing stretch and repeatedly interrupted her own control.”
The final exchange appears. Running Elbow Smash. Running Bicycle Knee. Both women fall.
The clock expires.
Paul Redford: “The draw moved Sorina to two points and gave Bella Aurelia her first.”
Dave Kent: “Sorina remains unbeaten through forty minutes of block competition.”
Paul Redford: “But she also remains without a victory.”
Dave Kent: “That is the honest version. Two draws have kept the champion alive. They have not placed her in control.”
The footage freezes on Sorina carrying the championship while staring toward the standings.
Paul Redford: “Dante Rook leads the Iron General Hammer Block with four points and owns direct victories over both men currently tied behind him.”
Dave Kent: “That is the strongest position in either men’s block. Dante has not simply accumulated points. He has denied them to the competitors closest to him.”
Paul Redford: “Owen Starling and Piers Holloway remain tied with two.”
Dave Kent: “And tonight, the attention moves to the bottom.”

She springs backward, rotates through the air, and attempts to crash across Bridget before the larger wrestler can establish her base.

She steps away from the landing point, sends Holly forward, and immediately climbs the ropes.
Holly rises into a Missile Dropkick.
Both boots strike her squarely in the upper chest and drive her backward.

Paul Redford: “Quarter Three has now passed its midpoint.”

Small-Town Manitoba
A battered pickup truck moves along a narrow two-lane highway beneath a dark prairie sky.
The town ahead is little more than a scattered collection of homes, a gas station, a diner, and a grain elevator rising against the horizon. A light snow drifts across the road, thin enough to see through but steady enough to soften the edges of everything.
Behind the wheel sits Colt “Grindhouse” Maddox.
Beside him, Billy Pearl occupies most of the passenger seat. The former superstar wears a heavy black coat over a dark tracksuit. A paper cup of coffee rests between his thick hands.
Billy looks through the windshield at the distant lights.
Billy Pearl: “This the place?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Town population’s just under twelve hundred.”
Billy takes a drink.
Billy Pearl: “That doesn’t answer my question.”
Colt glances at the dashboard clock.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Yes. This is the place.”
Billy grunts.
Billy Pearl: “High school gym?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “That’s what the flyer said.”
Billy looks down at the crumpled event poster resting across his lap.
The production company’s name is printed in cheap red lettering above a photograph of several local wrestlers. At the bottom, beneath the words MAIN EVENT, is a masked figure wearing blood-red and black gear.
DR. BLUD
Billy studies the image.
Billy Pearl: “Your nephew chose that name?”
Colt keeps his attention on the road.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Clint always believed subtlety was a weakness.”
Billy Pearl: “Can’t fault the boy for truth in advertising.”
Colt does not laugh.
Billy looks toward him.
Billy Pearl: “You nervous?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “No.”
Billy waits.
Colt’s hands tighten slightly around the steering wheel.
Billy Pearl: “You’re gripping that wheel like it owes you money.”
Colt exhales.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I haven’t seen him wrestle live in months.”
Billy Pearl: “You’ve seen footage.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Footage can be edited.”
Billy Pearl: “And family can make excuses.”
Colt gives him a sharp glance.
Billy does not look away.
After a moment, Colt returns his eyes to the road.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “That’s why I asked you to come.”
Billy’s expression softens slightly.
Billy Pearl: “Good.”
The truck passes a roadside sign welcoming them to town.
Ahead, the high school gymnasium glows beneath yellow parking-lot lights.
The Local Show
The gymnasium smells of popcorn, floor polish, and old athletic equipment.
A small wrestling ring has been erected at centre court. The basketball hoops have been folded upward, and three rows of metal chairs surround the ring. Fewer than two hundred people are in attendance, though the promoter has arranged them tightly enough to make the room feel fuller.
A handmade merchandise table stands near the entrance.
A local announcer tests a microphone that produces more static than sound.
Children in winter coats run between the bleachers while their parents try to keep them seated.
Colt and Billy enter without fanfare.
Billy immediately draws several looks.
A few older attendees whisper to one another, recognizing him. One man points from across the gym, but Billy keeps his head down and follows Colt toward the upper section of the retractable bleachers.
They take seats with a clear view of the ring.
Billy looks around.
Billy Pearl: “I worked rooms like this for ten years.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “So did I.”
Billy Pearl: “No. You worked rooms with heat.”
Colt glances at the old radiators lining the wall.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Builds character.”
Billy rubs his hands together.
Billy Pearl: “Builds pneumonia.”
The lights dim as much as a high school gym’s lights can dim.
The show begins.
The First Four Matches
The opening contest features two young wrestlers moving carefully through a basic sequence of arm drags, hip tosses, and headlocks.
One forgets which corner he is meant to run toward.
The other attempts a dropkick several feet away from his opponent.
The crowd applauds politely when the match ends.
Billy leans toward Colt.
Billy Pearl: “Neither one.”
Colt writes two names in a small notebook, then crosses them both out.
The second match is a slow heavyweight contest between two men whose greatest talent appears to be breathing loudly into the front row.
One applies a chinlock for nearly three minutes.
Billy checks the gymnasium clock.
Billy Pearl: “That hold’s older than both of them combined.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Big one has size.”
Billy Pearl: “So does the grain elevator.”
Colt crosses out another name.
The third match is a women’s tag-team contest.
One competitor shows promise—good footwork, strong presence, a clean snap suplex—but the match collapses when her partner repeatedly misses cues.
Colt makes a longer note this time.
Billy looks over.
Billy Pearl: “The woman in blue?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Maybe.”
Billy Pearl: “Needs better people around her.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “That’s what schools are for.”
Billy nods.
The fourth match is presented as a grudge match, though neither wrestler seems particularly angry.
They exchange forearms, trade a few near falls, and finish with a poorly executed roll-up that leaves both men looking confused.
The audience still applauds.
Colt closes his notebook.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Nothing we need.”
Billy looks toward the entrance curtain.
Billy Pearl: “Then we’re here for one man.”
Colt says nothing.
The ring announcer steps through the ropes with a card in hand.
His voice squeals through the speakers.
Ring Announcer: “Ladies and gentlemen, it is now time for tonight’s main event!”
The crowd becomes noticeably louder.
Several younger fans move toward the barricade.
Colt leans forward.
Billy watches him more than the entrance.
Main Event – Dr. Blud vs Kid Superstaro
Bright, upbeat music begins playing through the school’s sound system.
Kid Superstaro emerges first.
He is young, lean, and dressed in brightly coloured gear covered with silver stars. A short cape hangs from his shoulders. He wears a half-mask and slaps hands with children as he circles the ring.
He leaps onto the apron and flips over the top rope.
The crowd cheers.
Billy studies his landing.
Billy Pearl: “Athletic.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Too eager.”
Kid Superstaro climbs one turnbuckle and raises both arms.
Billy Pearl: “That can be coached.”
The music stops.
A slow, distorted heartbeat begins pulsing through the speakers.
The gym lights flicker red.
A figure steps through the curtain.
Dr. Blud.
Clint Maddox wears a cracked white medical mask splattered with painted red stains. His sleeveless black coat is marked with crude red crosses and stitched lettering. Athletic tape wraps both wrists, though one side is noticeably thicker than the other.
He carries a small metal medical case in one hand.
Colt sees it immediately.
His expression hardens.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “He doesn’t need that.”
Billy watches Clint’s walk.
Dr. Blud does not acknowledge the fans. He stares directly at Kid Superstaro, walking slowly around the ring as if examining a patient.
A child reaches toward him.
Clint stops, turns his masked face toward the child, then snaps the metal case shut inches from the boy’s hand.
The child recoils.
Clint laughs.
Billy grunts.
Billy Pearl: “Presence is good.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Judgment isn’t.”
Clint climbs onto the apron, wipes his boots carefully, and enters.
The referee takes the metal case from him and passes it outside.
Clint raises both hands to show that they are empty.
Colt watches the thick wrist tape.
The bell rings.
The Opening Exchange
Kid Superstaro immediately uses his speed.
He circles Clint, ducks beneath a clothesline, and catches him with a fast arm drag. Clint rolls through and rises quickly, only for the Kid to strike him with a dropkick.
Clint falls through the ropes to the floor.
The crowd cheers.
Kid Superstaro runs toward the opposite ropes, building momentum for a dive.
Clint turns and sees him coming.
Instead of moving, he reaches beneath the bottom rope, catches the Kid by the ankle, and yanks him face-first onto the canvas.
The crowd groans.
Clint pulls the Kid beneath the ropes and lets his upper body hang over the apron.
Then he drives a forearm across the Kid’s chest.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
Each strike is heavier than necessary.
Billy Pearl: “Good cutoff.”
Colt nods reluctantly.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Could have stopped after the first.”
Clint climbs onto the apron and drops a knee across the back of the Kid’s neck.
The Kid collapses to the floor.
The referee orders Clint back into the ring.
Clint steps through the ropes but immediately exits through the other side, forcing the referee to restart the count.
Billy’s brow furrows.
Billy Pearl: “That’s wasted motion.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “He thinks the longer he hurts someone, the more important he looks.”
Clint pulls Kid Superstaro upright and throws him shoulder-first into the metal ring post.
The impact echoes through the gym.
Clint grabs him before he can fall and sends him into the post again.
This time, the Kid’s shoulder strikes at an awkward angle.
Several fans recoil.
Billy stops smiling.
The Kid Fights Back
Clint rolls the Kid into the ring and follows.
He moves slowly, taking time to taunt the front row.
That delay gives Kid Superstaro an opening.
The Kid catches him with a jawbreaker, then hits a springboard crossbody.
Clint falls.
The Kid covers.
Referee: “One! Two—”
Clint kicks out forcefully.
Kid Superstaro runs the ropes and connects with a spinning heel kick.
Clint staggers into the corner.
The Kid sees his chance.
He rushes in with a running knee, then climbs rapidly to the top rope.
The audience rises.
Billy leans forward.
Billy Pearl: “Good balance.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Too soon.”
Kid Superstaro launches into a high twisting body press.
Clint steps aside.
The Kid crashes hard onto the canvas.
Clint stands over him.
Instead of covering, he drives the toe of his boot into the Kid’s ribs.
Then again.
The referee warns him.
Clint pushes past the official and kicks the Kid a third time.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “There. That’s the problem.”
Billy keeps his eyes on the ring.
Billy Pearl: “He had the match.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “He doesn’t want the match. He wants the story people tell afterward.”
Clint pulls the Kid upright and hooks him for a suplex.
He lifts him.
Then, rather than completing the move, Clint walks toward the corner with the Kid suspended vertically.
His balance wavers.
Billy’s expression changes.
Billy Pearl: “Put him down.”
Clint takes another step.
The Kid shifts.
Clint nearly loses control before dropping him across the top turnbuckle.
The Kid lands badly, his leg catching between the ropes.
The audience falls quiet.
Colt sits rigidly.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “That was stupid.”
Billy nods.
Billy Pearl: “That wasn’t violence. That was carelessness.”
Dr. Blud Escalates
The referee frees the Kid’s leg.
Clint drags him into the centre of the ring and delivers a heavy piledriver.
The move lands cleanly.
Billy points toward the ring.
Billy Pearl: “There. Cover him.”
Clint does not.
Instead, he sits beside Kid Superstaro and taps the side of his own mask.
Then he looks directly toward the bleachers.
Toward Colt.
Clint has seen him.
Even from a distance, Colt knows it.
Clint reaches toward his heavily taped wrist.
Colt immediately stands.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “No.”
Billy sees the motion too.
Billy Pearl: “Sit down.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “He’s reaching for it.”
Billy Pearl: “You walk down there now, you turn his stupidity into part of the show.”
Colt remains standing.
In the ring, Clint shields his hand from the referee.
Kid Superstaro is still on his back.
Clint bends over him.
A quick motion.
Small enough that much of the audience misses it.
Colt does not.
Billy does not.
A thin red line appears across the Kid’s forehead.
Then another.
Clint pulls him upright by the mask and drives a forearm into the cut.
Blood begins running down the Kid’s face.
The crowd reacts loudly—some cheering, others recoiling.
Clint’s body language changes.
He becomes energised by it.
He looks around the gym, arms spread, drinking in the reaction.
Colt slowly sits back down.
His expression is not anger now.
It is worry.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “He promised me he stopped carrying blades.”
Billy’s jaw tightens.
Billy Pearl: “He lied.”
Clint strikes the wound again.
Kid Superstaro tries to cover his face.
Clint grabs both wrists and forces his hands away.
Billy Pearl: “He’s got the reaction. Now he needs to finish.”
Clint throws the Kid into the corner and charges.
The Kid manages to lift both boots.
Clint absorbs them and stumbles.
The audience cheers as Kid Superstaro pulls himself onto the second rope.
Blood covers one side of his face.
He launches with a desperate missile dropkick.
Clint falls.
The Kid climbs again.
This time, he goes all the way to the top rope.
His legs shake beneath him.
Billy shakes his head.
Billy Pearl: “He shouldn’t be up there.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Clint should stop him.”
The Kid leaps into a shooting star press.
Clint raises both knees.
The Kid crashes down across them.
The breath leaves his body.
Clint rolls him over.
He could cover him.
Instead, Clint climbs the ropes himself.
Colt stands again.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “He doesn’t do top-rope moves.”
Billy’s voice becomes sharper.
Billy Pearl: “Then why is he climbing?”
Clint reaches the top turnbuckle awkwardly.
He stands, sways, and leaps with a diving elbow.
The elbow lands, but Clint’s hip and shoulder strike the canvas almost as hard as the Kid.
Both men lie still.
Billy looks disgusted.
Billy Pearl: “That bought him nothing.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “He saw the Kid getting attention up there. He had to prove he could do it too.”
Billy Pearl: “That’s insecurity, not wrestling.”
Clint rises first, clutching his shoulder.
He drags the Kid to his knees and hooks both arms.
With a violent snap, Clint drives him down with a double-underhook facebuster.
The Kid lies motionless.
Clint places one boot across his chest.
Referee: “One! Two! Three!”
The bell rings.
Ring Announcer: “Your winner—Dr. Blud!”
The crowd reacts loudly.
Clint raises both arms.
Blood covers his forearms, though none of it belongs to him.
He looks toward Colt and Billy again.
This time, he removes his mask.
His grin is broad and proud.
Colt does not applaud.
Billy does not move.
After the Match
The show ends quickly.
Volunteers fold chairs while the ring announcer thanks the crowd for attending. Children gather near the merchandise table, talking excitedly about the blood in the main event.
Kid Superstaro sits behind the curtain while a local medic works on his forehead.
Colt and Billy wait near the gymnasium’s rear hallway.
Clint eventually emerges from the locker room wearing jeans, boots, and a sleeveless black shirt. His hair is damp. A duffel bag hangs over one shoulder.
He sees Colt first.
His grin fades slightly.
Then he notices Billy.
His entire expression changes.
Clint Maddox: “No way.”
Billy folds his arms.
Clint drops his bag beside the wall and approaches quickly.
Clint Maddox: “Billy Pearl?”
Billy nods once.
Clint looks almost awestruck.
Clint Maddox: “You’re Billy Pearl. The Billy Pearl.”
Billy Pearl: “Last time I checked.”
Clint laughs and looks toward Colt.
Clint Maddox: “You brought Billy Pearl to my match?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “We came to scout.”
Clint barely hears him.
He turns back toward Billy.
Clint Maddox: “You were one of my heroes. That cage match in Regina? I wore out the tape. The chair shots, the blood, the way you kept getting up—nobody does that anymore.”
Billy’s expression remains flat.
Billy Pearl: “There’s a reason nobody does some of it anymore.”
Clint laughs, assuming it is a joke.
Billy does not.
Clint’s smile weakens.
Clint Maddox: “What did you think?”
Billy studies him for several seconds.
Billy Pearl: “You want the truth?”
Clint Maddox: “Of course.”
Billy Pearl: “You have presence.”
Clint’s smile returns.
Billy Pearl: “You understand how to make people watch you. Your piledriver was good. Your timing on the knees was good. You knew when that kid wanted to fly, and you made him pay for it.”
Clint nods enthusiastically.
Clint Maddox: “Exactly.”
Billy Pearl: “Then you ruined it.”
The smile disappears.
Clint Maddox: “Ruined what?”
Billy Pearl: “The match.”
Clint looks toward Colt as though expecting him to intervene.
Colt remains silent.
Billy continues.
Billy Pearl: “You threw him into the post twice when once was enough. You nearly dropped him because you wanted to walk around with him upside down. You climbed the ropes to do a move you don’t know how to do.”
Clint Maddox: “It landed.”
Billy Pearl: “So would falling off a roof. That doesn’t make it good wrestling.”
Clint’s jaw tightens.
Clint Maddox: “The crowd loved it.”
Billy Pearl: “The crowd would watch a car crash too.”
Clint looks genuinely offended now.
Clint Maddox: “You’re telling me not to be violent?”
Billy steps closer.
Billy Pearl: “No. I’m telling you not to be stupid.”
The hallway becomes quiet.
Colt watches Billy carefully.
Billy gestures back toward the gym.
Billy Pearl: “I love violence. Always have. I believe a wrestling match should hurt. I believe opponents should leave knowing they were in a fight.”
He points toward Clint’s taped wrist.
Billy Pearl: “But violence has to serve something.”
Clint’s eyes narrow.
Billy Pearl: “That blade didn’t help you win. It didn’t change the match. It didn’t protect you. You used it because you wanted people to think you were dangerous.”
Clint Maddox: “I am dangerous.”
Billy Pearl: “Dangerous people don’t have to keep proving it every thirty seconds.”
Clint looks toward Colt.
Clint Maddox: “You told him.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I told him the truth.”
Clint Maddox: “You always take their side.”
Colt’s face hardens.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Whose side?”
Clint Maddox: “The Academy. The evaluators. Everybody who says I’m too violent.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “You are too violent.”
Clint stares at him.
The words clearly hurt more coming from Colt.
Clint Maddox: “You said they were wrong.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “They were wrong to say you had no future.”
Colt steps closer.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “They were not wrong about why you weren’t ready.”
Clint looks away.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “You cut that kid tonight without telling him.”
Clint Maddox: “He knew what kind of match he was in.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Did he agree to be bladed?”
Clint does not answer.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Did he?”
Clint Maddox: “He wanted the main event.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “That isn’t an answer.”
Clint picks up his bag.
Clint Maddox: “I won. The crowd reacted. The promoter already asked me back.”
Billy Pearl: “Small promoters will keep asking you back until you cripple yourself or somebody else.”
Clint turns toward him.
Clint Maddox: “You built your career doing worse.”
Billy accepts the accusation without flinching.
Billy Pearl: “Yes.”
The simple answer catches Clint off guard.
Billy Pearl: “I did things I should not have done. I hurt people when I didn’t need to. I let crowds convince me that pain was the same thing as quality.”
Billy looks toward the empty gym.
Billy Pearl: “It took me years to understand the difference.”
He turns back to Clint.
Billy Pearl: “You have somebody trying to teach you that difference before it costs you everything.”
Clint glances at Colt.
His expression becomes defensive again.
Clint Maddox: “So this is what this was? An intervention?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “It was an opportunity.”
Clint Maddox: “For what?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “For you to show us you were ready.”
Clint laughs bitterly.
Clint Maddox: “Ready for the Forge?”
Colt nods.
Clint’s arrogance returns.
Clint Maddox: “Then sign me.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “No.”
Clint freezes.
Clint Maddox: “What?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “You heard me.”
Clint Maddox: “I’m better than half the people you brought in.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Maybe.”
Clint Maddox: “I’m more experienced than CHAT XYZ. I’m tougher than Billy South. I could destroy half your class.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “That isn’t the qualification.”
Clint Maddox: “The Forge is supposed to reward aggression.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Controlled aggression.”
Clint points toward the gym.
Clint Maddox: “I controlled that whole match.”
Billy shakes his head.
Billy Pearl: “No. Your impulses controlled it.”
Colt moves directly in front of his nephew.
His voice lowers.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I left the Iron Ring Academy partly because they rejected you.”
Clint says nothing.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I told myself they failed to recognize your talent. I told myself they were afraid of what you could become.”
He pauses.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Tonight, I saw what they saw.”
The arrogance slips from Clint’s face.
For a moment, he looks less like Dr. Blud and more like a young man being confronted by someone whose approval matters to him.
Then the wall goes back up.
Clint Maddox: “So now you’re afraid too.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I’m concerned.”
Clint Maddox: “Same thing.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “No.”
Colt places one hand on Clint’s shoulder.
Clint does not pull away, but his body stiffens.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Fear makes you abandon someone. Concern makes you tell them something they don’t want to hear.”
Clint looks down at Colt’s hand.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “You have talent. Real talent. But you take risks without understanding the cost. You hurt people because you think mercy makes you look weak. And when somebody tries to correct you, you treat it like betrayal.”
Clint lifts his eyes.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Until you are ready to be coached, I cannot bring you into the Forge.”
Clint pushes Colt’s hand away.
Clint Maddox: “You can’t or you won’t?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Both.”
Clint Maddox: “You’re supposed to be family.”
Colt’s expression tightens.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “That is why I’m saying no.”
Clint grabs his bag and moves toward the exit.
Billy calls after him.
Billy Pearl: “Clint.”
Clint stops but does not turn around.
Billy Pearl: “You called me your hero.”
Clint glances back.
Billy Pearl: “Then learn from my mistakes, not just my scars.”
Clint’s face remains unreadable.
He looks from Billy to Colt.
Clint Maddox: “I’m not changing who I am.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Then you’re not ready.”
Clint walks away.
The rear doors slam behind him.
The Ride Home
Later, Colt and Billy sit inside the parked truck.
Snow gathers along the windshield.
Neither man speaks for some time.
The high school gym has gone dark behind them.
Colt watches the doors through which Clint disappeared.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I told Sasha the Academy rejected him because they were afraid of aggression.”
Billy looks out through the windshield.
Billy Pearl: “Maybe you needed to believe that.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I defended the blading.”
Billy turns toward him.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Said he was establishing dominance.”
Billy Pearl: “Tonight?”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Before. The IWF match.”
Billy nods slowly.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I knew it was wrong.”
The admission hangs between them.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “I just didn’t want them to be right about him.”
Billy leans back in the passenger seat.
Billy Pearl: “They aren’t right about his future.”
Colt looks at him.
Billy Pearl: “They may have been right that he wasn’t ready.”
Colt’s hands rest on the steering wheel.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “You think he’ll listen?”
Billy thinks for a moment.
Billy Pearl: “Not tonight.”
Colt gives a humourless laugh.
Billy Pearl: “Maybe not next month.”
Billy looks toward the doors.
Billy Pearl: “But you gave him something more useful than a contract.”
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “A rejection?”
Billy Pearl: “A boundary.”
Colt remembers Sasha’s warning.
There must be boundaries. Especially for coaches.
He looks down.
Billy notices.
Billy Pearl: “Someone say that to you recently?”
Colt starts the engine.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Something like that.”
Billy settles back into the seat.
Billy Pearl: “Smart person.”
Colt glances at him.
Colt Grindhouse Maddox: “Don’t push it.”
Billy smiles faintly.
The truck pulls away from the high school.
Behind them, the small gymnasium disappears into the snowy Manitoba night.
Ahead lies the long road back to the Forge.
Neither man has found the new recruit they came looking for.
But something between them has changed.
Colt no longer sees Billy Pearl merely as a famous veteran added to the coaching staff.
Billy no longer sees Colt merely as an angry former Academy coach trying to prove a point.
For the first time, they understand the responsibility they now share.
Not simply to make wrestlers dangerous.
To make certain they survive what that danger can become.
The pale white flame flickers across the screen.
A metallic bell tolls once.
Fade to black.
