Shadows Across the Realms: Interlude 002 - "What the Rabbit Saw"

“What the Rabbit Saw”

Location: Wonderland — The White Corridor Beneath the Looking Gates
Time: Later — after Dark Hatter’s return to NPCW

The corridor beneath the Looking Gates is not supposed to exist for more than a minute at a time.

That is one of Wonderland’s older rules.

A sensible rule.

A necessary rule.

Corridors that remain too long begin to think they are roads. Roads begin to think they are borders. Borders begin to ask who gave them permission to hold anything in or keep anything out.

But tonight, the White Corridor remains.

Its walls stretch in both directions, pale and polished, lined with crooked doors that open onto nowhere, somewhere, and places no one has agreed to name. The ceiling is low in some spots and impossibly high in others. Lanterns hang upside down. Their flames burn downward.

At the center of the corridor stands Alice.

Not in the ring.

Not under the lights.

Not beside Dorothy.

Here, she is not one half of the Blonde Bombshells.

Here, she is Wonderland’s daughter.

Her expression is tense as she waits beside a door much too small for anyone except the one she has come to meet.

The door opens.

The White Rabbit slips through.

He is trembling.

Not hurrying.

Trembling.

That alone is enough to trouble her.

The White Rabbit is always late, always moving, always frantic with purpose. His fear usually comes dressed as urgency.

Tonight, it comes dressed as stillness.

He closes the little door behind him, then checks the corridor both ways.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Alice folds her arms.

ALICE
Rabbit.

He jumps at his own name.

WHITE RABBIT
Don’t say it so loudly.

Alice lowers her voice.

ALICE
You asked me to come.

WHITE RABBIT
Yes.

He checks the corridor again.

WHITE RABBIT
No. I mean—yes, I did. I did ask. Very important. Very dangerous. Very much not the sort of thing one should ask unless asking has already become safer than silence.

Alice studies him.

ALICE
You said it was about Hatter.

The Rabbit flinches.

Alice’s expression hardens.

ALICE
What happened to him?

The Rabbit looks up at her.

His eyes are wide.

Wet.

Afraid in a way Alice has never seen from him.

WHITE RABBIT
He came back wrong.

A beat.

ALICE
From NPCW?

The Rabbit shakes his head quickly.

WHITE RABBIT
No. From here.

That lands.

Alice steps closer.

ALICE
Tell me.

The Rabbit wrings his gloved hands.

WHITE RABBIT
I should not have seen it.

ALICE
But you did.

He nods.

A little.

WHITE RABBIT
I saw enough.

The lantern flames bend toward him, as if the corridor itself wants to hear.

The Rabbit notices.

He moves closer to Alice and speaks barely above a whisper.

WHITE RABBIT
After the breach in the fairy dominion, the Queen of Hearts sent him back. To learn what had happened. To speak with the Card Captain. To take measure of Wonderland’s readiness.

Alice says nothing.

She knows that much.

Everyone in the court knows that much.

The Rabbit continues.

WHITE RABBIT
The Card Captain gave his report in the Hall of Suits. I was meant to deliver revised road schedules, gate keys, curfew drafts, and a list of who was still allowed to be where they claimed to be.

He swallows.

WHITE RABBIT
No one asked me to stay.

ALICE
But you did.

WHITE RABBIT
I was late leaving.

Alice almost smiles.

Almost.

The Rabbit does not.

His voice lowers.

WHITE RABBIT
The Captain told him everything. The fissure. The shadows. King Richard. Pan. Hook. Tinkerbell. The Wizard. The fairies. The card soldiers who fell.

A pause.

WHITE RABBIT
The Lost Boy who was taken.

Alice’s face changes.

ALICE
Taken?

The Rabbit nods.

WHITE RABBIT
Not killed. Worn.

The word curdles in the corridor.

One of the upside-down flames goes out.

Alice turns toward it, then back.

ALICE
And Hatter?

The Rabbit looks down.

WHITE RABBIT
At first, he was still Hatter.

The corridor seems to pull backward around them.

Not truly.

Memory does that in Wonderland if spoken carefully enough.

The Rabbit’s voice changes.

Not into performance.

Into witness.

The Hall of Suits is full of maps.

Not ordinary maps.

Wonderland has never trusted ordinary maps. Ordinary maps lie by pretending the world has decided where it belongs.

These maps breathe.

The red roads shift when insulted. The black roads vanish when stared at too long. The mirror paths refuse to appear unless addressed politely. Oz glimmers along one wall in emerald and gold. Neverland flickers above another in green fire and starlit blue. Wonderland itself sits at the center, a crown of red and black roads wrapped around a palace that seems to be looking back.

The Card Captain stands beside the central table, helmet tucked beneath one arm.

He looks exhausted.

Paint has been scraped from one cheek of his armor. A black scar crosses the edge of his shield. His hands are steady only because he is forcing them to be.

Across from him stands Hatter.

Still in his old coat.

Still with that restless tilt to his head.

Still with eyes that cannot decide whether they are laughing, grieving, or looking at three different days at once.

He listens.

Sometimes.

Then he interrupts himself.

HATTER
Three shadows, you say? But three is a table if one leg lies, and a table is only useful if someone intends to sit at it. Did they sit? Did they stand? Did they unfold? Unfolding is a terrible habit. Napkins do it and nobody thanks them.

The Card Captain does not smile.

CARD CAPTAIN
They emerged from the fissure, sir. They attacked the fairy host and ground defenses. One infiltrated the Lost Boy.

Hatter’s grin twitches.

Then falters.

For one clear second, the nonsense leaves him.

HATTER
Infiltrated?

The Card Captain nods.

CARD CAPTAIN
The shadow entered him. Used him to widen the breach.

Hatter’s fingers tighten around the edge of the map table.

HATTER
A child became a door.

The room stills.

The Card Captain says nothing.

Hatter’s gaze flicks toward Neverland on the wall.

Then Oz.

Then Wonderland.

The manic movement returns, but weaker now. Frayed at the edges.

HATTER
Doors, doors, doors. Everyone loves a door until something knocks from the wrong side. Did it knock? No, no, rude things never knock. They arrive by becoming the house.

He turns sharply.

HATTER
Where is the Heart Division?

CARD CAPTAIN
Split between Oz and Neverland, as ordered by the alliance.

Hatter’s expression flickers again.

Madness.

Clarity.

Madness.

Clarity.

A candle burns blue beside him.

Then black.

Then blue again.

HATTER
Recall them.

The Card Captain blinks.

CARD CAPTAIN
Sir?

Hatter stands straighter.

His voice loses the lilt.

HATTER
Recall the Heart Division from Oz and Neverland. Immediately.

The Captain’s posture shifts.

He is no longer listening to a fool.

He is receiving orders.

CARD CAPTAIN
That will weaken allied positions.

HATTER
Yes.

A pause.

HATTER
And preserve Wonderland’s strongest blood when the first false road opens inside our own walls.

The Card Captain absorbs that.

Hatter begins moving around the map table, pointing as he speaks.

His thoughts still skip strangely, but the strategy beneath them is sharp.

Too sharp to ignore.

HATTER
Heart and Spade fortify Wonderland proper. Palace, throne, inner roads, mirror gates, rabbit routes, court archives, execution yard, royal armory. Curfew by moonrise. No unsanctioned crossings. No unsealed summons. No looking glass opened without two witnesses and one liar.

The Card Captain nods quickly.

CARD CAPTAIN
Heart and Spade to Wonderland.

HATTER
Diamond goes to Oz.

He taps the emerald road.

HATTER
They like angles. Oz likes roads. Perhaps between them they can agree which way forward is.

Another tap.

This time toward Neverland.

HATTER
Club to Neverland. If shadows can wear Lost Boys, then every hiding place becomes a battlefield.

The Card Captain’s face tightens.

CARD CAPTAIN
And the Queen?

Hatter looks at him.

The old grin returns for half a heartbeat.

HATTER
Which one?

The Captain does not answer.

Hatter’s grin dies.

HATTER
Protected. Both by walls and ignorance. Tell her enough to make her command. Not enough to make her curious.

The Captain bows his head.

CARD CAPTAIN
It will be done.

Hatter’s fingers drum once against the table.

Then stop.

Perfectly.

The Rabbit, hidden behind a half-open evidence door with a stack of curfew notices clutched to his chest, feels his ears flatten.

Hatter looks toward the doorway.

For one terrible moment, the Rabbit thinks he has been seen.

But Hatter turns away.

HATTER
Go.

The Card Captain salutes and exits.

His footsteps fade.

The doors close.

The maps continue to breathe.

Hatter remains alone.

Or almost alone.

The Rabbit does not move.

He knows he should.

He absolutely knows he should.

But something has changed in the Hall of Suits.

Not sound.

Sound still exists.

The maps rustle. The candles hiss. The distant court murmurs beyond the walls.

But beneath the sound, something else has gone silent.

The part of Wonderland that giggles at its own impossibility.

Hatter feels it too.

He turns slowly.

HATTER
Oh.

His voice is small.

Too small.

HATTER
That is not a quiet I invited.

The candles bend.

Every flame in the room leans toward the head of the map table.

There is a chair there.

There has always been a chair there.

There has never been a chair there.

Both statements are true, and that is how the Rabbit knows the chair is dangerous.

A figure sits in it.

The Rabbit’s breath locks in his throat.

The figure is dressed like a court official from a kingdom that forgot color existed. Long black formal coat. Dark red lining. White gloves folded neatly over one knee. A porcelain mask where a face should be, smooth except for the suggestion of a mouth that has never needed to eat.

No suit mark.

No crest.

No crown.

No shadow.

Hatter stares at it.

His old smile tries to return.

It does not know how.

HATTER
You are not on the seating chart.

The figure inclines its head.

NAMELESS COURTIER
No.

The voice is polite.

Soft.

Terrible.

Hatter’s eyes dart to the maps.

HATTER
Court? Kingdom? Claim? Complaint? If you’ve come to petition, the line starts yesterday and ends in a cupboard.

NAMELESS COURTIER
I have not come to petition.

HATTER
Then you are trespassing.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Yes.

A pause.

The honesty makes the room colder.

Hatter’s fingers twitch.

HATTER
Bold.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Necessary.

Hatter leans forward.

HATTER
Name yourself.

The figure does not move.

NAMELESS COURTIER
No.

The maps stop breathing.

The Rabbit bites down on his own sleeve to keep from making a sound.

Hatter’s eyes sharpen.

For once, his madness seems useful. Dangerous. A storm trying to become a blade.

HATTER
Everything in Wonderland has a name, even if it borrows one badly.

NAMELESS COURTIER
That is why Wonderland is vulnerable.

Hatter laughs once.

The laugh breaks halfway through.

HATTER
Vulnerable? Wonderland? Oh, delicious insult, dreadful manners. We are impossible.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Impossible things still end.

The words do something to the room.

The red roads on the maps darken.

The mirror gates go flat.

Oz loses a little of its glow.

Neverland flickers.

Hatter sees it.

His expression changes.

HATTER
What are you?

The Nameless Courtier rises.

It does not push the chair back.

The chair is simply farther away than it was.

NAMELESS COURTIER
An invitation.

HATTER
I decline.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You have not heard the terms.

HATTER
I decline in advance. Saves time. Wastes less cake. Terrible for etiquette, excellent for survival.

The Courtier steps around the map table.

Its reflection does not appear in the polished surface.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You are loud.

Hatter’s eyes narrow.

HATTER
I have been complimented worse.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Not your voice.

The Courtier comes closer.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Your mind.

Hatter stiffens.

The Rabbit sees it.

A tiny crack in the performance.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Madness. Memory. Fear. Loyalty. Vanity. Hunger. Three thoughts wearing one hat. Five doors arguing over one key.

Hatter steps back.

HATTER
Stay where you are.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You were sent to gather information.

HATTER
I gathered.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You were sent to serve your queen.

HATTER
I serve.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You were sent to understand what touched the realms.

Hatter says nothing.

The Courtier’s blank mask turns toward the map of Neverland.

NAMELESS COURTIER
A child became a door.

Hatter’s face tightens.

The Courtier turns back.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Would you like to know how many doors there are in NPCW?

The question settles over the map table.

Hatter’s breathing changes.

HATTER
What court do you serve?

The Nameless Courtier stops directly across from him.

NAMELESS COURTIER
The court that remains after all crowns are forgotten.

Hatter’s old smile returns, forced now.

Defiant.

HATTER
Well, that sounds dull.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Yes.

The Courtier lifts one gloved hand.

A book rests in its palm.

It was not there before.

Black cover.

No title.

No emblem.

No suit.

The Rabbit’s eyes fix on it.

A ledger.

The sort of book that does not record what happens.

The sort that decides what will matter.

Hatter looks at the book.

Then away.

Then back again.

HATTER
I have books.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You have clutter.

Hatter’s eyes flash.

HATTER
I have style.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You have noise.

The word cuts.

Hatter flinches as if struck.

The Courtier opens the ledger.

Its pages are blank.

Too blank.

Not empty.

Waiting.

NAMELESS COURTIER
You have been laughed at.

Hatter’s jaw tightens.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Indulged.

Another step closer.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Dismissed.

Hatter tries to speak.

No words come.

NAMELESS COURTIER
They call you mad because it is easier than admitting you sometimes see the room before they enter it.

The Rabbit watches Hatter’s face.

Watches the old pain pass through it.

Fast.

Ugly.

Human.

HATTER
My madness is mine.

The Courtier tilts its head.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Is it?

A silence.

Hatter does not answer.

The Courtier’s voice softens.

Almost kindly.

That is worse.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Madness is a door without a lock. Useful until the wrong thing learns the handle.

The maps tremble.

Hatter looks toward the door.

For a moment, the Rabbit thinks he might run.

Instead, Hatter whispers:

HATTER
What do you want?

NAMELESS COURTIER
To improve you.

Hatter laughs again.

This time, the laugh comes out wrong.

Thin.

Afraid.

HATTER
Oh, no. No, no, no. Improvement is a terrible word. People improve knives by sharpening them.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Yes.

The Courtier reaches forward.

Hatter stumbles back, but the room folds.

Not visibly.

Not loudly.

One moment he is beyond reach.

The next, the Courtier’s white-gloved hand rests on the brim of his hat.

Hatter freezes.

The Rabbit nearly cries out.

Alice, in the corridor, hears the Rabbit’s voice shake as he tells it.

ALICE
What did it do?

The Rabbit closes his eyes.

WHITE RABBIT
It listened to him.

Alice frowns.

ALICE
Listened?

WHITE RABBIT
No. Not listened.

He struggles for the word.

WHITE RABBIT
Sorted.

The Courtier’s hand remains on Hatter’s hat.

Hatter’s eyes widen.

His mouth opens.

A hundred expressions try to cross his face at once.

Joy.

Panic.

Laughter.

Grief.

Anger.

Nonsense.

Clarity.

They flash through him too quickly to hold.

Then something begins to leave.

Not smoke.

Not light.

Not blood.

Something thinner.

The sound of almost-laughter curls from his mouth and rises into the air like a ribbon.

The old Hatter’s frantic mutterings spill out without words.

Scraps of rhyme.

Pieces of jokes.

Half-born riddles.

Names of days that do not exist.

Apologies never given.

Insults never finished.

The room fills with them.

The Rabbit presses himself deeper into the doorway, shaking.

The Courtier opens the black ledger.

The sound pours into the pages.

The pages do not fill.

They darken.

Hatter trembles.

For one horrible second, his eyes find the Rabbit’s hiding place.

The Rabbit knows he has been seen.

But Hatter does not call out.

He cannot.

The Courtier speaks.

NAMELESS COURTIER
There.

The last thread of laughter leaves Hatter’s mouth.

It disappears into the ledger.

The room becomes still.

Hatter lowers his head.

His coat darkens first.

Blue, purple, and old whimsy recede into black.

Crimson lines appear along the seams like thin wounds stitched in silk.

His collar rises, sharper than before.

His gloves become immaculate.

His hat straightens.

Not playful.

Not absurd.

Ceremonial.

Almost funereal.

When Hatter lifts his head, his eyes are steady.

Too steady.

The Courtier removes its hand.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Better.

Hatter breathes in.

Slowly.

As if learning quiet for the first time.

HATTER
It is so silent.

The Courtier closes the ledger.

NAMELESS COURTIER
No.

It places the book in Hatter’s hands.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Now you can hear what is beneath the noise.

Hatter looks down at the book.

His fingers close over the cover.

HATTER
What am I now?

The Courtier steps back.

NAMELESS COURTIER
Useful.

A beat.

HATTER
To whom?

The Courtier’s mask seems to smile without moving.

NAMELESS COURTIER
To the Queen who sees you.

Another beat.

NAMELESS COURTIER
To the court that remains.

Hatter looks at the map table.

Wonderland.

Oz.

Neverland.

Camelot.

NPCW, marked in a place where no map should have space to hold it.

He opens the ledger.

A pen is suddenly in his hand.

The Rabbit cannot remember seeing him take it.

Hatter writes the first name.

CRIMSON VIPER

Then another.

DARK DUCHESS

Then another.

LADY FROST

The Rabbit’s heart hammers.

Hatter pauses.

His head turns slightly.

Not toward the doorway.

Toward the space behind the doorway.

Toward the Rabbit’s breath.

His pen touches the page.

The Rabbit cannot see what he writes.

But he feels it.

A tug in his chest.

A sudden, terrible certainty that his own name has become heavier somewhere outside himself.

He runs.

He does not remember choosing to run.

He is in the hall.

Then another hall.

Then a stair.

Then a door that should have opened into the royal archives but instead opens under a hedge.

He runs until the world makes noise again.

He runs until his watch cracks.

He runs until he is late to everything and grateful for it.

The White Corridor returns around Alice and the Rabbit.

Alice has gone pale.

The Rabbit is shaking so badly now that his pocket watch rattles against his waistcoat.

ALICE
Why didn’t you tell anyone?

The Rabbit laughs once.

Not because anything is funny.

WHITE RABBIT
Who?

Alice has no immediate answer.

WHITE RABBIT
The Queen? Which queen? The Captain? The court? The doors? Half of them would call it treason. The other half would ask whether treason had been scheduled.

Alice steps closer.

ALICE
Why tell me now?

The Rabbit looks at her.

For a moment, he seems very small.

WHITE RABBIT
Because he came back to NPCW.

A beat.

WHITE RABBIT
Because he is not raving anymore.

Another beat.

WHITE RABBIT
Because everyone will think that means he is better.

Alice looks away.

She thinks of Hatter.

The old Hatter.

The jokes that made no sense until three days later.

The sudden flashes of wisdom hidden under foolishness.

The way people tolerated him because tolerating him was easier than understanding him.

Then she thinks of what the Rabbit described.

A man made quiet.

A mind sorted.

A book of names.

ALICE
Did it possess him?

The Rabbit shakes his head.

WHITE RABBIT
No.

That answer frightens her more.

ALICE
Then what happened?

The Rabbit’s ears lower.

WHITE RABBIT
It edited him.

The corridor lights flicker.

For a moment, Alice’s reflection appears in one of the polished doors.

Then it is gone.

The Rabbit grabs her wrist.

Not hard.

Desperate.

WHITE RABBIT
You must not let him write you down.

Alice looks at him.

ALICE
Rabbit—

WHITE RABBIT
Promise me.

His voice cracks.

WHITE RABBIT
Names matter now. I don’t know why. I don’t know how. But I felt it when he wrote mine. Like a hook through a word. Like someone had tied a string to the part of me the world remembers.

Alice says nothing.

The corridor stretches longer.

Somewhere far away, a door opens.

Or closes.

Or decides it has always been open and only now wishes to be noticed.

The Rabbit looks toward the sound.

Terror returns to his face.

WHITE RABBIT
He is called Dark Hatter now.

Alice’s jaw tightens.

ALICE
I know.

The Rabbit shakes his head.

WHITE RABBIT
No. You don’t.

He looks back at her.

WHITE RABBIT
Wonderland did not lose a madman.

A pause.

The corridor grows colder.

WHITE RABBIT
It gained a mapmaker for something that has no name.

Alice stares down the White Corridor.

Every crooked door waits.

Every lantern flame leans away from the dark.

For the first time in her life, Wonderland feels less impossible than fragile.

ALICE
Then we find out what court he serves.

The Rabbit grips his broken watch.

WHITE RABBIT
No.

Alice turns to him.

He swallows hard.

WHITE RABBIT
First we find out who he has already written down.

The lanterns go out one by one.

Not all at once.

In order.

Like names being crossed from a list.

The screen cuts to black.
