Dave Kent: “Esme has one point. She cannot afford to admire another good performance. She needs a result.”

A metallic bell tolls once.
The image slowly opens on the sprawling interior of the False Light Forge Wrestling School inside the Nutcracker Legion Compound.
Tonight, the Forge is alive.
Not simply active.
Growing.
What began several weeks ago as three wrestling rings and a handful of discarded prospects has begun transforming into something that resembles a genuine developmental system.
Heavy bags swing from steel beams along the walls. Weight stations occupy one side of the facility. Recruits run conditioning drills along marked lanes on the concrete floor. Nutcracker soldiers move equipment between stations while coaches shout instructions above the constant noise of bodies hitting canvas.
All three rings are occupied.
Everywhere the camera looks, someone is working.
And high above it all stretches the long steel catwalk overlooking the entire training floor.
Tonight, the Forge is receiving an inspection.
But before the visitors arrive—
There are four new recruits to meet.
THE NEW CLASS
Near the main entrance, Colt “Grindhouse” Maddox stands before four freshly signed wrestlers.
His scouting trip with Billy Pearl during the Forge's temporary closure has produced results.
Mateo Varga.
Skellan Skar.
Elodie Marchand.
And—
Rhea Quinn, “The Black Signal.”
Colt carries a clipboard underneath one arm as he looks across the four.
Nobody speaks.
Colt finally breaks the silence.
Colt Maddox:
“Welcome to the Forge.”
The four continue watching him.
Colt nods approvingly.
Colt:
“Good. Nobody thanked me.”
Mateo raises an eyebrow.
Colt:
“That wasn't ceremonial. I don't need ‘thank you, Coach.’ I need you to understand where you are.”
He points toward the three rings.
Colt:
“This isn't a place where you get handed a shirt, take a photograph, and spend six months being told how much potential you've got.”
He points toward Ring One.
Colt:
“You fight.”
Toward Ring Two.
Colt:
“You learn.”
Then toward Ring Three.
Colt:
“And eventually somebody decides whether you were worth the investment.”
All four look upward.
Several figures can already be seen moving onto the catwalk.
Colt notices.
Colt:
“Don't worry about them yet.”
He gives them a hard smile.
Colt:
“Worry about me.”
He stops first before Mateo Varga.
The Argentinian recruit carries himself with effortless confidence. Lean, handsome, composed, Mateo somehow appears immaculately presented even inside a wrestling school.
Colt checks the clipboard.
Colt:
“Mateo Varga.”
Mateo Varga:
“You did read the application.”
Colt:
“I read everything.”
Mateo smiles.
Mateo:
“Then you already know I'm very good.”
Colt looks up.
Colt:
“I know you think you're very good.”
Mateo's smile does not disappear.
Colt:
“Technical ability is there. Timing is there. You're clever.”
Colt steps closer.
Colt:
“Clever wrestlers have one bad habit.”
Mateo:
“Winning?”
Colt:
“Believing nobody else is clever.”
That finally diminishes Mateo's smile.
Colt moves on.
He stops before Skellan Skar.
The Norwegian recruit is thick, scarred and imposing, with the weathered appearance of someone far more comfortable exchanging blows than discussing wrestling theory.
Skellan's hands are already taped.
He keeps looking toward the rings.
Colt checks the file.
Colt:
“Skellan Skar.”
Skellan grunts.
Colt:
“Bare-knuckle background.”
Another grunt.
Colt looks up.
Colt:
“Is that your entire vocabulary?”
Skellan finally looks at him.
Skellan Skar:
“I came here to fight.”
Colt:
“Good.”
Colt gestures toward the rings.
Colt:
“Eventually you'll learn how.”
Skellan's eyes narrow.
Skellan:
“I already know.”
Colt:
“No. You know how to hurt somebody.”
Colt lightly taps the clipboard against Skellan's chest.
Colt:
“Professional wrestling means knowing exactly how much hurt you need.”
A grin appears beneath Skellan's beard.
Skellan:
“What if I prefer too much?”
Colt smiles back.
Colt:
“Then you'll learn.”
A pause.
Colt:
“Or somebody here will teach you.”
That answer seems to satisfy him.
Colt moves on.
Next is Elodie Marchand.
The contrast is immediate.
The Frenchwoman stands with perfect posture. Her movements are economical and controlled. Her dark hair is drawn into a severe style and her expression gives away almost nothing.
If Skellan looks impatient to fight, Elodie looks as though she has already studied everyone in the room and determined precisely where they are vulnerable.
Colt looks at her file.
Colt:
“Elodie Marchand.”
Elodie Marchand:
“Yes.”
Colt:
“Former ballet prodigy.”
Nothing.
Colt:
“Excellent balance. Technical wrestling. Limb work. Precision.”
Elodie gives him the slightest nod.
Colt:
“I've watched your footage.”
Elodie:
“And?”
Colt studies her.
Colt:
“You don't lose your temper.”
Elodie:
“Anger creates mistakes.”
Colt smiles.
Colt:
“Now that I like.”
Elodie glances toward the rings.
Elodie:
“Pain works better when it is deliberate.”
Colt's smile widens.
Colt:
“You're going to fit in just fine.”
Then Colt comes to the final recruit.
Rhea Quinn — “The Black Signal.”
Rhea looks less like someone attending wrestling-school orientation than someone who wandered into the building to determine which rules are worth breaking.
Her family roots stretch between Dublin and Glasgow, and both sides of that heritage show through her rugged presentation.
Dark green and black dominate her training gear, accented with rough tartan elements. Her wrists are heavily taped. Her boots look broken-in rather than decorative, and a worn jacket hangs open over athletic ring gear.
Nothing about Rhea looks polished.
Everything looks lived in.
She stands with her weight slightly to one side and a crooked smile already forming as Colt looks at the clipboard.
Colt:
“Rhea Quinn. Dublin. Glasgow family.”
Rhea raises one finger.
Rhea Quinn:
“Careful now. Half Dublin, half Glasgow. Insult one side and the other one starts the fight.”
Colt looks up.
Colt:
“Former pirate-radio host.”
Rhea:
“Independent broadcaster.”
Colt:
“Your transmitter was confiscated.”
Rhea:
“Government criticism.”
Colt:
“You were broadcasting without a licence.”
Rhea:
“That sounds very much like government criticism.”
Mateo laughs quietly.
Colt continues.
Colt:
“Street fighting.”
Rhea:
“Community outreach.”
Colt:
“Underground wrestling.”
Rhea:
“Grass-roots athletics.”
Colt lowers the clipboard slightly.
Colt:
“Exposing crooked promoters while simultaneously starting fights with them.”
Rhea grins.
Rhea:
“Public service.”
Colt finally lowers the clipboard entirely.
Colt:
“You always have an answer?”
Rhea steps slightly closer.
Rhea:
“Only when somebody asks a stupid enough question.”
Skellan gives an amused grunt.
Elodie remains perfectly expressionless.
Colt studies Rhea.
She's joking.
But she isn't nervous.
She is testing him.
Testing his authority.
Testing whether the man standing in front of her deserves the respect his position supposedly demands.
Colt:
“You know what happens to people who spend all their time testing their coaches?”
The grin suddenly disappears.
Rhea's voice becomes cold.
Rhea:
“I find out whether they're actually worth listening to.”
One second joking.
The next deadly serious.
Colt stares at her.
Then the corner of his mouth curls upward.
Colt:
“Good answer.”
Rhea immediately grins again.
Rhea:
“I've got loads of them.”
Colt turns away.
Colt:
“That's exactly what worries me.”
He motions toward the rings.
Colt:
“Tour starts now.”
RING ONE — CALCULATION
Inside Ring One, Dominik Rask has CHAT XYZ trapped near the ropes.
Dominik works with the compact, dense power of a Greco-Roman wrestler. His arms are locked around CHAT's waist, hips underneath him, denying the futuristic wrestler room to maneuver.
Standing outside the ring is Nutcracker Captain.
He evaluates every movement.
Beside him stands HAL.
HAL does not move.
His black-and-red mask faces the ring, glowing eyes following every exchange.
Nutcracker Captain:
“Lower, Dominik!”
Dominik adjusts immediately.
Captain:
“Take away the hips!”
CHAT attempts to turn.
Dominik plants himself.
CHAT reaches downward, captures Dominik's wrist, rolls beneath the arm and suddenly slips behind him.
Dominik turns—
CHAT hooks the leg and sweeps him down before floating into wrist control.
Rhea stops walking.
Rhea:
“Oh, I like him.”
Colt glances at her.
Colt:
“CHAT XYZ.”
Rhea watches CHAT transition smoothly around Dominik.
Rhea:
“Moves like he's arguing with gravity and somehow winning.”
Mateo studies the same exchange.
Mateo:
“He surrendered strength to create position.”
Rhea turns toward him.
Rhea:
“Congratulations, professor. We all watched the same thing.”
Mateo smiles.
Mateo:
“You hide your intelligence behind insults.”
Rhea:
“And you hide yours behind your hair.”
Mateo instinctively touches his hair.
Rhea points.
Rhea:
“See? Easy.”
Inside the ring, Dominik grimaces beneath the wrist control.
Nutcracker Captain immediately calls out.
Captain:
“Don't fight the wrist! Fight his base!”
Dominik steps inside, changes level and drives upward.
CHAT is abruptly lifted and slammed down with a heavy mat return.
CHAT hits the canvas—
Rolls—
And immediately tries converting the landing into another escape.
Rhea watches closely.
Then she notices HAL.
The masked wrestler has not moved.
Rhea:
“And what's his problem?”
Colt:
“HAL.”
HAL slowly turns his head toward her.
Rhea stares back.
Rhea:
“You always look that cheerful, darling?”
HAL says nothing.
Rhea waits.
Nothing.
She turns back toward Colt.
Rhea:
“Brilliant conversation. We'll get on famously.”
HAL continues staring.
Rhea points toward him without looking back.
Rhea:
“If he murders me, I'm blaming recruitment.”
Colt ignores her.
Inside the ring, CHAT rises.
Dominik advances.
Nutcracker Captain:
“Again!”
Colt addresses the recruits.
Colt:
“Dominik came here with power, discipline and almost no interest in entertaining anybody.”
He points toward CHAT.
Colt:
“CHAT came here believing there's an answer to every problem.”
Then HAL.
Colt:
“HAL believes every problem eventually stops moving.”
HAL slowly turns toward Colt.
A pause.
Colt:
“Metaphorically.”
HAL turns back toward the ring.
Rhea leans toward Mateo.
Rhea:
“I don't think he means metaphorically.”
RING TWO — THE TOLLKEEPER
A violent crash interrupts the tour.
Everyone turns.
Inside Ring Two, Thruk the Tollkeeper has just launched Nutcracker #1 across the canvas.
Nutcracker #1 crashes near the ropes.
Before Thruk can follow, Nutcracker #2 charges him from behind.
Thruk spins.
He catches Nutcracker #2 around the body and drives him violently backward into the corner.
The turnbuckles shake.
Skellan stops walking.
For the first time since entering the Forge, his expression genuinely lights up.
Skellan:
“That one.”
Colt knows immediately what he means.
Colt:
“Thruk.”
The two Nutcrackers regroup.
Thruk backs into the middle of the ring and motions for both of them to attack simultaneously.
Nutcracker #1 comes high.
Nutcracker #2 attacks low.
They collide with Thruk together.
The Tollkeeper staggers—
But stays upright.
He throws a heavy strike that sends Nutcracker #1 sprawling.
Nutcracker #2 grabs the leg.
Thruk simply reaches down, locks his hands around the man's waist and physically tears him away.
Skellan takes a step toward the apron.
Colt catches his shoulder.
Colt:
“Not today.”
Skellan never takes his eyes from Thruk.
Skellan:
“I want him.”
Rhea immediately speaks up.
Rhea:
“Oh, absolutely. Let them.”
Colt turns toward her.
Colt:
“No.”
Rhea:
“Coward.”
Colt:
“I'm responsible for the building.”
Thruk sends Nutcracker #2 crashing across the ring.
Rhea looks at the ropes.
Rhea:
“Not for long if those two get started.”
Thruk notices Skellan.
He approaches the ropes.
Skellan steps closer.
The two enormous men stare at one another.
No introduction.
No threat.
No theatrics.
Thruk gives the slightest nod.
Skellan returns it.
Rhea folds her arms.
Rhea:
“Right. There's your first pay-per-view. You're welcome.”
Colt shakes his head.
Colt:
“You've been here ten minutes.”
Rhea:
“And already improving the place.”
Colt looks toward Skellan again.
Colt:
“Eventually.”
Skellan smiles.
Thruk hears it.
His smile answers.
RING THREE — CONTROL
The third ring is quieter.
Not less intense.
Just different.
Inside, Anika and Clara Cobwebb circle one another beneath the watchful eye of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Anika presses forward with overwhelming physical strength.
She reaches for Clara—
Clara slips sideways.
Anika turns and catches her.
Clara attempts to control the wrist and create an angle.
Anika simply powers through and shoves her backward.
Sugar Plum raises one hand.
Sugar Plum Fairy:
“Stop.”
Both women freeze immediately.
Sugar Plum enters the ring.
She approaches Anika.
Sugar Plum:
“You solved the problem with strength.”
Anika nods.
Sugar Plum:
“That will work against Clara.”
She gestures toward the watching recruits.
Her eyes settle momentarily on Elodie.
Sugar Plum:
“It will not work against everyone.”
Elodie's expression remains cool.
Sugar Plum notices.
For several seconds, the two women study one another.
Then Sugar Plum turns back to Anika.
Sugar Plum:
“Again.”
Anika prepares.
Sugar Plum:
“This time, do not overpower her.”
Anika looks displeased.
Sugar Plum gives no ground.
Sugar Plum:
“Outthink her.”
The drill begins again.
Elodie watches carefully.
Anika advances.
Clara moves.
Elodie's eyes immediately shift downward.
Colt notices.
Colt:
“Something interest you?”
Elodie:
“Her left foot.”
Colt looks at Anika.
Colt:
“What about it?”
Elodie:
“She plants too heavily before changing direction.”
Anika shoots forward.
Clara escapes.
For just a fraction of a second, Anika's planted foot delays the turn.
Elodie was right.
Sugar Plum's attention shifts from the sparring session toward Elodie.
She smiles faintly.
Sugar Plum:
“You.”
Elodie raises an eyebrow.
Sugar Plum points inside the ring.
Sugar Plum:
“Tomorrow.”
Elodie looks at Anika.
Anika looks back.
Neither woman smiles.
Elodie:
“Certainly.”
Colt shakes his head.
Colt:
“Been here five minutes.”
Rhea leans toward him.
Rhea:
“I like the French one.”
Without turning—
Elodie:
“I can hear you.”
Rhea grins.
Rhea:
“See? Excellent hearing too.”
THE CATWALK — THE INSPECTION
High above the training floor, a second evaluation is taking place.
The Nutcracker General stands at the railing.
Beside him is Billy Pearl, the former superstar turned Forge coach, his thick arms folded across his chest.
Footsteps sound along the steel walkway.
The General turns.
Approaching is Grand Manipulator Lucien Vantrell.
Lucien is dressed in severe black formal clothing accented with restrained silver. There is none of Ardan Vantrell's eccentric theatricality in the new Grand Manipulator.
Lucien's authority operates differently.
Colder.
Quieter.
At his side walks Lord Gunthar, imposing and rigid, carrying himself with the unmistakable bearing of a man accustomed to commanding soldiers.
Beside them is Elyra Moane, calm and observant, her eyes already drifting between the three active rings.
A few steps behind walks Gregory, quiet and watchful.
Nutcracker General straightens.
Nutcracker General:
“Grand Manipulator.”
Lucien stops beside him.
Lucien Vantrell:
“General.”
Billy Pearl gives Lucien a respectful nod.
Lucien acknowledges him in kind.
Lord Gunthar looks across the training floor.
Something close to approval enters his expression.
Lord Gunthar:
“It has grown.”
Nutcracker General:
“Quickly.”
Gunthar looks toward him.
Gunthar:
“You always did build quickly.”
The General gives him a sideways look.
Nutcracker General:
“You always demanded impossible deadlines.”
Gunthar:
“And yet you met them.”
Billy looks between the two.
Billy Pearl:
“So that's where he gets it.”
Gunthar almost smiles.
Lucien steps to the railing.
He watches.
Ring One—
Dominik drives CHAT into the canvas.
Ring Two—
Thruk throws another Nutcracker across the ring.
Ring Three—
Anika and Clara continue their drill.
Across the floor, Colt guides the four new recruits through the facility.
Lucien says nothing for several moments.
Nobody interrupts him.
Finally—
Lucien:
“How many?”
The General responds immediately.
Nutcracker General:
“Active recruits?”
Lucien:
“Yes.”
Nutcracker General:
“Enough to operate properly.”
He pauses.
Nutcracker General:
“Not yet enough to satisfy me.”
Lucien's eyes move toward Colt's group.
Lucien:
“The new four?”
Billy Pearl steps closer to the railing.
Billy:
“Our latest intake.”
He indicates Mateo.
Billy:
“Mateo Varga. Technically gifted. Smooth. Smart. Knows exactly how charming he is.”
Lucien watches Mateo speaking with Rhea.
Lucien:
“A manipulator.”
Gregory smiles faintly.
Billy:
“Potentially.”
Billy next indicates Skellan.
Billy:
“Skellan Skar. Norwegian. Raw brawler.”
Below, Skellan still glances toward Thruk.
Billy:
“Likes getting hit almost as much as hitting somebody.”
Lord Gunthar gives an approving grunt.
Gunthar:
“That can be useful.”
Billy looks toward him.
Billy:
“It can also be stupid.”
Gunthar:
“Those conditions frequently coexist.”
Billy cannot argue.
Elyra is no longer looking at Skellan.
Her attention has settled on Elodie.
The Frenchwoman stands near Ring Three, studying Anika.
Elyra Moane:
“And her?”
Billy:
“Elodie Marchand. Lyon. Ballet before wrestling.”
Elyra raises an eyebrow.
Billy:
“Don't let that fool you. She's cold.”
A faint smile touches Elyra's face.
Elyra:
“Coldness is frequently mistaken for absence of passion.”
She watches Elodie carefully.
Elyra:
“Sometimes it merely means passion has been disciplined.”
Lucien glances toward Elyra.
He understands precisely why Elodie has caught her attention.
Billy moves to the final recruit.
Below, Rhea is talking to Mateo while simultaneously watching the rest of the facility.
Billy:
“Rhea Quinn.”
Lucien looks downward.
Billy:
“Calls herself ‘The Black Signal.’ Half Irish, half Scottish. Dublin upbringing, Glasgow family roots.”
Lord Gunthar continues watching her.
Billy:
“Pirate radio. Underground wrestling. Street fighting. Built herself a reputation exposing crooked promoters and starting fights with some of them.”
Gunthar frowns.
Gunthar:
“She openly attacks authority?”
Billy smiles.
Billy:
“Only authority she thinks deserves it.”
Gunthar's frown deepens.
Billy:
“So, yes. Constantly.”
Elyra watches Rhea exchange another remark with Colt.
Even from above, Colt looks exasperated.
Elyra:
“She is disruptive.”
Billy:
“Extremely.”
Below, Colt says something.
Rhea immediately fires something back.
Billy continues.
Billy:
“She'll talk herself into a fight just to see whether the other person has the courage to finish the argument.”
Lucien studies her.
Lucien:
“Undisciplined?”
Gregory answers.
Gregory:
“No.”
Everyone looks toward him.
Gregory watches Rhea.
Gregory:
“Deliberate.”
Below, Rhea appears to be joking with Mateo.
But her eyes move toward Ring One.
Then Ring Two.
Then Sugar Plum in Ring Three.
Then the coaches.
Then—
Upward.
Toward the catwalk.
Gregory:
“She watches everyone.”
Lucien follows his gaze.
Gregory:
“She makes people believe she isn't taking anything seriously.”
A pause.
Gregory:
“That encourages them to reveal themselves.”
Elyra gives the faintest smile.
Elyra:
“A useful talent.”
Billy nods.
Billy:
“And if she smells hypocrisy, she won't let go. Doesn't matter whether you're another recruit, a promoter, a coach…”
Billy pauses.
Billy:
“…or probably the Grand Manipulator.”
Nutcracker General slowly turns toward him.
Billy clears his throat.
Billy:
“Hypothetically.”
Lucien continues watching Rhea.
The faintest amusement appears on his face.
Lucien:
“I would prefer not to test the hypothesis unnecessarily.”
Below, as though sensing she is being discussed, Rhea looks upward.
She raises two fingers in a casual salute toward the catwalk.
Lord Gunthar narrows his eyes.
Gunthar:
“Was that directed at us?”
Billy smiles.
Billy:
“Almost certainly.”
Lucien's gaze remains on Rhea.
Lucien:
“Keep her.”
The General looks toward him.
Lucien explains.
Lucien:
“Organizations occasionally benefit from people willing to say what everyone else is carefully avoiding.”
He pauses.
Lucien:
“Provided they eventually learn when silence is strategically superior.”
Billy watches Rhea.
Billy:
“That may take a while.”
WHAT THE FORGE HAS BECOME
Lucien begins walking slowly along the catwalk.
Below him, the Forge continues working.
Lucien:
“When my father first entered professional wrestling, I regarded the entire exercise as beneath the Circle.”
Gunthar looks toward him.
Lucien:
“I considered arenas loud. Vulgar. Uncontrolled.”
Elyra responds softly.
Elyra:
“Ardan disagreed.”
Lucien gives her a glance.
Lucien:
“My father frequently disagreed.”
There is the faintest suggestion of humor.
Then it is gone.
Lucien turns back toward the floor.
Lucien:
“He was correct about one thing.”
Everyone waits.
Lucien:
“Professional wrestling creates influence.”
Below, Colt continues guiding the new recruits.
Lucien:
“It creates loyalty.”
CHAT reverses another hold.
Lucien:
“Identity.”
Thruk drives Nutcracker #1 backward.
Lucien:
“Heroes.”
Anika resets across from Clara.
Lucien:
“Enemies.”
Elodie observes every detail.
Lucien:
“Symbols.”
He places one hand against the railing.
Lucien:
“And unlike the traditional methods of the Circle, nobody hides the influence.”
Elyra understands immediately.
Elyra:
“They purchase tickets for it.”
Lucien looks toward her.
Lucien:
“Precisely.”
Lord Gunthar folds his arms.
Gunthar:
“Ardan once joked that I should open a wrestling school.”
The Nutcracker General looks toward him.
Gunthar:
“I told him the Fist trained soldiers, not entertainers.”
Billy gestures toward the floor.
Billy:
“Turns out the difference isn't as big as you thought.”
Gunthar gives him a mildly irritated look.
Billy smiles.
Lucien continues.
Lucien:
“What began as an experiment has become something considerably more useful.”
He looks over the entire facility.
Then toward the Nutcracker General.
Lucien:
“I am pleased.”
Coming from Lucien Vantrell, the words carry considerable weight.
The General straightens slightly.
Nutcracker General:
“We are only beginning.”
Lucien:
“Good.”
His next instruction is immediate.
Lucien:
“Continue.”
The General nods.
Lucien is not finished.
Lucien:
“Expand as necessary.”
The General's brow rises.
Lucien:
“Additional rings if required. More conditioning equipment. Medical facilities. Housing. Recruitment infrastructure. Additional coaching staff.”
Billy looks toward him.
Lucien:
“If this facility requires something, acquire it.”
Nutcracker General:
“There will be considerable expense.”
Lucien turns toward him.
Lucien:
“Cost is not presently a concern.”
Billy Pearl raises his eyebrows.
Lucien continues.
Lucien:
“The Circle requires the Forge to succeed.”
Lord Gunthar gives a firm nod.
Gunthar:
“You heard him.”
Nutcracker General looks down over the busy training floor.
For the first time since the Forge opened, there is no need to think small.
Nutcracker General:
“Then I will expand.”
Lucien regards him coolly.
Lucien:
“I expect you to.”
THE QUESTION
Lucien remains at the railing.
For several seconds he watches the activity below.
Then—
Lucien:
“Quarter Four.”
The General looks toward him.
Nutcracker General:
“Grand Manipulator?”
Lucien:
“October.”
Nutcracker General:
“Yes.”
Lucien continues watching the rings.
Lucien:
“I want one.”
Billy turns toward him.
Nutcracker General:
“One?”
Lucien gestures toward the training floor.
Lucien:
“One wrestler produced by this facility.”
His voice remains calm.
Lucien:
“Not an exhibition appearance.”
Below, Thruk catches Nutcracker #2.
Lucien:
“Not a training match.”
CHAT slips out of Dominik's grip.
Lucien:
“Not another controlled demonstration.”
Sugar Plum corrects Clara while Anika waits.
Lucien:
“I want someone prepared to walk into a major wrestling promotion at the beginning of the fourth quarter…”
He looks toward the General.
Lucien:
“…and compete.”
Silence follows.
Billy looks over the roster.
Billy:
“That's aggressive.”
Lucien glances toward him.
Lucien:
“I was under the impression aggression was encouraged here.”
Billy smiles.
Billy:
“Fair enough.”
Gunthar turns toward Nutcracker General.
Gunthar:
“Well?”
The General does not immediately answer.
His gaze travels across the facility.
Dominik.
CHAT XYZ.
HAL.
Thruk.
Anika.
Clara.
Then the four newest recruits.
Mateo.
Skellan.
Elodie.
Rhea.
Different personalities.
Different bodies.
Different weapons in different stages of construction.
Finally—
Nutcracker General:
“Yes.”
Lucien remains expressionless.
Lucien:
“Yes, it can be done?”
The General turns toward him.
Nutcracker General:
“No.”
Lucien waits.
The General continues.
Nutcracker General:
“Yes. One will be ready.”
Even Billy looks slightly surprised by the certainty.
Lucien's mouth curls into the faintest smile.
Lucien:
“Which one?”
The General turns back toward the rings.
Nutcracker General:
“That is what the next six weeks will tell us.”
Lucien considers the answer.
Then nods.
Lucien:
“Acceptable.”
Elyra continues studying the recruits.
Elyra:
“And if more than one is ready?”
The General looks toward her.
Nutcracker General:
“Then the Grand Manipulator has a better problem.”
Lucien smiles slightly.
Lucien:
“Precisely.”
ORIENTATION ENDS
Down on the floor, Colt finishes the tour.
Mateo, Skellan, Elodie and Rhea stand together beside Ring One.
Colt turns toward them.
Colt:
“Orientation's over.”
Rhea looks around.
Rhea:
“That was orientation?”
Colt:
“Yes.”
Rhea:
“No welcome speech?”
Colt:
“No.”
Rhea:
“No inspirational slogan?”
Colt:
“No.”
Rhea looks genuinely disappointed.
Rhea:
“Not even a wee biscuit?”
Colt stares.
Rhea:
“This school has terrible hospitality.”
Mateo adjusts his cuffs.
Mateo:
“I would have preferred champagne.”
Rhea looks him over.
Rhea:
“You look like you'd complain about the vintage.”
Mateo:
“Naturally.”
Rhea nods.
Rhea:
“I've changed my mind. We're definitely going to fight.”
Skellan is not interested.
He looks toward Ring Two.
Skellan:
“I prefer the ring.”
Elodie has already begun removing her outer jacket.
Elodie:
“Then perhaps everyone should stop talking.”
Rhea slowly turns toward her.
A grin forms.
Rhea:
“Oh, the French one has claws.”
Elodie meets her gaze.
Elodie:
“And you have volume.”
Rhea's grin grows enormous.
Rhea:
“I knew I liked you.”
Elodie simply walks away.
Colt points toward the training stations.
Colt:
“Mateo. Technical station.”
Mateo sighs theatrically but heads toward it.
Colt:
“Skellan. Captain wants to see your striking.”
Skellan moves before Colt even finishes speaking.
Colt:
“Elodie. Sugar Plum.”
Elodie walks toward Ring Three.
Colt turns toward Rhea.
Rhea points to herself.
Rhea:
“Main event?”
Colt:
“Conditioning.”
Her face falls.
Rhea:
“Ah.”
She places a hand against her chest.
Rhea:
“Now that's cruel.”
Colt:
“Move.”
Rhea begins walking backward toward the conditioning station.
Rhea:
“I was told this place encouraged individuality.”
Colt:
“It does.”
Rhea:
“Then individually, I've decided I hate conditioning.”
Colt does not miss a beat.
Colt:
“Fifty burpees.”
Rhea stops.
Rhea:
“For expressing myself?”
Colt:
“Sixty.”
Rhea points accusingly toward him.
Rhea:
“See, this is how authoritarian regimes begin.”
Colt:
“Seventy.”
Rhea immediately turns and starts toward the station.
Rhea:
“Long live the establishment.”
From the catwalk, Billy Pearl begins laughing.
Even the Nutcracker General's expression changes slightly.
Rhea drops her jacket beside the conditioning station.
She starts.
One repetition.
Two.
Three.
Still talking.
Still complaining.
But Colt notices something.
Her form is excellent.
Her pace does not slow.
She does not cheat a single repetition.
Colt opens the clipboard.
He writes:
RHEA QUINN — TALKS CONSTANTLY.
He pauses.
Then adds beneath it:
WORKS EVEN HARDER.
A faint smile crosses his face.
THE INSPECTION CONCLUDES
Above the training floor, Lucien steps away from the railing.
Lord Gunthar follows.
Gregory falls quietly behind him.
Elyra remains for another few moments.
Her eyes remain on Ring Three.
Elodie has now stepped through the ropes.
Sugar Plum stands between her and Anika.
The two recruits stare at each other.
No smiles.
No friendliness.
Elyra appears interested.
Then she turns and follows the others.
Lucien reaches the stairs.
He stops.
Looks back.
Lucien:
“General.”
The Nutcracker General turns.
Nutcracker General:
“Grand Manipulator?”
Lucien gives him a single reminder.
Lucien:
“October.”
The General nods.
Nutcracker General:
“October.”
Lucien descends the stairs.
EPILOGUE — THE CLOCK STARTS
Billy Pearl remains behind with the Nutcracker General.
For a while, neither man speaks.
The Forge continues below them.
Ring One—
Dominik and CHAT XYZ exchange holds while HAL silently studies both men.
Ring Two—
Thruk waits impatiently for Nutcracker #1 and Nutcracker #2 to regain their feet.
Ring Three—
Elodie now stands across from Anika while Sugar Plum explains something between them.
Elsewhere—
Skellan drives heavy blows into a striking pad held by Nutcracker Captain.
Mateo works through a technical sequence and interrupts his own coach to suggest a more elegant counter.
Rhea continues doing burpees.
She is somewhere beyond twenty.
And somehow still arguing with Colt from twenty feet away.
Billy folds his arms.
Billy Pearl:
“Six weeks.”
Nutcracker General:
“Enough.”
Billy looks toward him.
Billy:
“You really believe that?”
The General surveys the entire facility.
He watches Thruk.
Then Dominik.
CHAT.
HAL.
Anika.
Clara.
Mateo.
Skellan.
Elodie.
Finally Rhea.
Rhea completes another burpee, looks toward Colt and shouts—
Rhea:
“If I die, put ‘victim of oppressive coaching’ on the stone!”
Colt does not even turn around.
Colt:
“Seventy-one.”
Rhea:
“Oh, you miserable—”
Billy laughs again.
The General remains focused.
Nutcracker General:
“One will be ready.”
Billy's smile fades as he considers the possibilities.
Billy:
“And if none of them are?”
The General's eyes remain fixed on the training floor.
Nutcracker General:
“Then we forge harder.”
A massive impact sounds from Ring Two.
Billy exhales.
Billy:
“I was afraid you'd say that.”
The camera begins pulling backward.
The entire Forge comes into view.
Three active rings.
Multiple coaches.
A growing roster.
New equipment.
New recruits.
And above everything, the steel catwalk where the newly installed Grand Manipulator has just placed the first true deadline upon the school.
October.
Six weeks.
One debut.
The Forge is no longer simply trying to prove that it can compete with the Iron Ring Academy.
Now it has been given something far more dangerous.
A destination.
The pale white flame spreads across the screen.
The metallic bell tolls once.
Fade to black.
