The False Light Forge is almost unrecognizable after hours.
The three rings sit beneath dimmed industrial lights. Heavy bags hang motionless. The clang of weights, shouted instructions and bodies hitting canvas has disappeared.
Most of the trainees have returned to the dormitories.
Most.
Inside the conditioning area, one barbell crashes back onto its supports.
Dominik Rask sits up from the bench beneath it.
Sweat runs down his face and neck. His shirt has been discarded over a nearby chair. His wrists are freshly wrapped despite the day's scheduled training having ended more than an hour ago.
Dominik stands.
Adds another plate.
Then another.
He doesn't notice the figure standing beyond the edge of the light.
Partially concealed behind one of the steel support columns is Rhea Quinn.
Her arms are folded.
She has been there long enough to know this isn't merely extra conditioning.
Dominik trains as though stopping would allow something to catch him.
He lies beneath the bar again.
Rhea watches.
Quietly.
A rare condition for her.
Dominik presses the weight upward.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
His breathing grows heavier.
Rhea's eyes narrow.

She says it softly enough that he cannot hear.

The Nutcracker General's office overlooks the main training floor through a wall of reinforced glass.
A long table occupies the centre of the room.
Around it sit four people.

And Sugar Plum Fairy.
Spread across the table are profiles, tournament notes and four sheets marked for the September Battle Royals.
The General stands rather than sits.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Eight positions.”
He looks around the table.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Five women.”
Billy leans back in his chair.
BILLY PEARL: “Which means three of them work twice.”
Sugar Plum taps one manicured finger against the paperwork.
SUGAR PLUM FAIRY: “And those three should be the people most prepared to win.”
Nutcracker Captain folds his arms.
NUTCRACKER CAPTAIN: “Agreed.”
Sugar Plum doesn't hesitate.

Nobody objects.

She sits straighter.

Billy smiles.

A beat.

Billy laughs.
Even Captain's mouth twitches.
The General remains serious.

Captain responds immediately.

Sugar Plum looks toward him.
SUGAR PLUM: “Not Clara?”
CAPTAIN: “Elodie is more composed.”

Billy raises a hand.

The General turns toward him.

Billy leans forward.
BILLY: “Because NPCW doesn't know what any of those three really are yet.”
He points at Anika's profile.
BILLY: “They haven't seen Anika unleashed.”
He points toward Elodie's.
BILLY: “They haven't seen Elodie solve somebody over fifteen minutes.”
Then Rhea's.
Billy pauses.
BILLY: “And they definitely haven't spent enough time around this one.”
Sugar Plum smiles.
SUGAR PLUM: “I'm not certain anyone should.”
Billy ignores her.
BILLY: “That's the advantage.”
He looks around the table.
BILLY: “Clara's been around. You're known.”
He nods toward Sugar Plum.
BILLY: “Those three aren't.”
Captain studies the files.
CAPTAIN: “Unknown does not mean superior.”
BILLY: “No.”
Billy taps Anika's name.
BILLY: “But surprise matters in a Battle Royal.”
Outside the office, beyond the partly shadowed upper corridor, Rhea slowly approaches.
She hears her name.

Then quietly positions herself around the corner.

Or so she believes.
Inside, Sugar Plum picks up Rhea's file.
SUGAR PLUM: “Rhea has upside.”
Billy looks at her.

She flips a page.
SUGAR PLUM: “But she still lets herself get dragged into exchanges because somebody irritates her.”
Billy snorts.
BILLY: “Somebody?”
SUGAR PLUM: “Everyone irritates her.”
From outside the room, Rhea silently mouths—

The General continues.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Anika is unanimous.”
All four nod.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Sugar Plum has support from three.”
Captain nods.
Billy concedes with a shrug.
BILLY: “She makes sense.”
The General looks toward Billy.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “And Quinn.”
Captain doesn't immediately respond.
Sugar Plum folds her hands.
SUGAR PLUM: “She is improving very quickly.”
Billy smiles.
BILLY: “There you go.”
Sugar Plum points at him.
SUGAR PLUM: “Do not make me regret saying that.”
The General looks toward Captain.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Captain?”
Captain thinks for several seconds.
CAPTAIN: “She is unpredictable.”
Billy nods.

Rhea hears the office door opening.
Her eyes widen.

She silently retreats into the darker section of the upper corridor.

Billy pauses.
For half a second, he seems to look directly toward the shadows where Rhea stands.
Rhea holds perfectly still.
Billy looks away.
Then continues downstairs.
Rhea slowly exhales.
RHEA: “Still got it.”
Several minutes later, footsteps climb the stairs.
Anika Stahl appears.
Even dressed down after training, there is nothing relaxed about her.
Her blonde hair is still pulled tightly back. Her shoulders remain square. Her posture is formal.
A Nutcracker soldier gestures toward the office.
NUTCRACKER SOLDIER: “The General is expecting you.”
Anika enters.
The door closes.
Rhea looks toward the stairwell.
Then toward the office.
She should leave.
Instead—
RHEA: “Well, that's interesting.”
She edges closer.
THE GENERAL AND ANIKA
Anika stands before the General's desk.
She does not sit.
Neither does he.
ANIKA STAHL: “You requested me, General?”
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Yes.”
He gestures toward the chair.
Anika considers it.
Then sits.
The General remains standing.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “The coaching team has been evaluating every recruit since this facility opened.”
Anika says nothing.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Your evaluations are consistently among the strongest.”
There is no visible smile.
But Anika's chin rises slightly.
ANIKA: “I expect them to be.”
The General almost approves of that answer.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Sugar Plum considers your strength exceptional.”
Anika waits.

Another pause.

NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “The first.”
He places one sheet down.
Then another.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “And the fourth.”
Anika nods.
ANIKA: “Good.”
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “You consider that suitable?”
ANIKA: “I would have considered all four suitable.”
The General almost laughs.
Almost.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “You sound like Quinn.”
Anika's expression immediately flattens.
ANIKA: “No.”
The General allows the faintest smile.
Outside—
Rhea looks personally offended.
RHEA: “Rude.”
The General's expression becomes serious again.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “There is another matter.”
Anika waits.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “In the first Battle Royal…”
He pauses.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “I do not want you trying too hard to win.”
For the first time in the conversation, Anika looks genuinely confused.
ANIKA: “Explain.”
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “You heard me.”
ANIKA: “I heard you.”
Her jaw tightens.
ANIKA: “I am asking why.”
The General walks toward the window overlooking the rings.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Because the purpose of the first Battle Royal is not merely victory.”
Anika rises.
ANIKA: “Then what is the purpose of entering?”
The General turns.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Information.”
Anika stares.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “NPCW has seen very little of you.”
He gestures toward the darkened gym below.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “They know you are strong.”
A pause.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “They do not know how strong.”
Anika begins to understand.
She doesn't like it.
But she understands.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “I do not intend to show the Forge's full hand in the opening contest.”
ANIKA: “You want me to hold back.”
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “I want you to compete.”
He steps toward her.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “I want you to be impressive.”
Then—
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “But I do not want you revealing everything.”
Anika's face hardens.
ANIKA: “And if I can win?”
The General does not hesitate.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “You will make the decision in the moment.”
Anika studies him carefully.
ANIKA: “That is not what you said before.”
The General's expression remains calm.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “No.”
A beat.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “It is what I am saying now.”
He leans slightly forward.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “Do not sacrifice a guaranteed victory.”
Anika waits.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “But do not exhaust yourself merely to prove something in Battle Royal One.”
The distinction matters.
Anika considers it.
ANIKA: “And Battle Royal Four?”
The General's answer comes immediately.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “No restraint.”
Anika's eyes sharpen.
That she likes.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “If you reach the fourth without already qualifying…”
His voice drops.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “…show them exactly what the Forge created.”
Anika gives a slow nod.
ANIKA: “That I can agree to.”
The General extends his hand.
Anika takes it.
NUTCRACKER GENERAL: “You have a significant future here, Anika.”
Anika releases the handshake.
ANIKA: “I know.”
The General watches her leave.
CAUGHT
The office door opens.
Rhea moves back into the shadows.
Anika steps into the corridor.
She walks toward the stairwell without noticing anything.
Rhea waits.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Then quietly emerges.
Her expression is thoughtful now.
No joke.
She looks back toward the General's office.
RHEA: “So that's the game.”
She turns toward the opposite stairwell.
BILLY PEARL: “Not very good at this, are you?”
Rhea freezes.
Slowly turns.
Billy Pearl stands ten feet away.
Arms folded.
Rhea immediately smiles.
RHEA: “Billy.”
Billy says nothing.
RHEA: “Lovely evening for standing mysteriously in corridors.”
BILLY: “How much did you hear?”
Rhea places a hand against her chest.
RHEA: “Hear?”
Billy gives her a look.
RHEA: “I was simply enjoying the architecture.”
BILLY: “Rhea.”
RHEA: “Fine.”
She steps closer.
RHEA: “Some.”
Billy's eyebrows rise.
RHEA: “Most.”
Billy continues staring.
Rhea sighs.
RHEA: “All right, all of it.”
Billy shakes his head.
BILLY: “You need to be more careful.”
Rhea's expression changes slightly.
The joke is still there.
But now she recognizes the warning beneath his words.
RHEA: “Was careful.”
BILLY: “No.”
He points toward the floor.
BILLY: “You were quiet.”
Then toward her.
BILLY: “That's not the same thing.”
Rhea folds her arms.
RHEA: “Nobody saw me.”
Billy stares at her.
Rhea pauses.
RHEA: “Except you.”
Billy waits.
Rhea sighs again.
RHEA: “Which admittedly weakens the argument.”
Billy steps closer and lowers his voice.
BILLY: “You want to watch people?”
Rhea doesn't answer.
BILLY: “Then learn something.”
She looks at him.
BILLY: “Don't always hide where you can see everything.”
Rhea's brow furrows.
Billy points toward the dark office window.
BILLY: “Because that means anyone looking out can see you.”
Rhea turns toward the glass.
For the first time, she notices her faint reflection.
She looks back at Billy.
RHEA: “Ah.”
Billy nods.
BILLY: “Exactly.”
Rhea thinks about it.
Then smiles.
RHEA: “You've done this before.”
Billy starts walking away.
BILLY: “Go to bed, Quinn.”
Rhea follows him toward the stairs.
RHEA: “That was not an answer.”
BILLY: “Wasn't meant to be.”
RHEA: “So you've definitely done this before.”
Billy continues walking.
RHEA: “Spy work?”
Nothing.
RHEA: “Burglary?”
Nothing.
RHEA: “International jewel theft?”
Billy stops.
Turns toward her.
BILLY: “Rhea.”
She grins.
RHEA: “Aye?”
Billy points down the stairs.
BILLY: “Dorm.”
Rhea gives him a mock salute.
RHEA: “Yes, sir.”
She begins descending.
Then stops one step down.
Looks back.
RHEA: “Billy?”
BILLY: “What?”
The humor has gone again.
RHEA: “Anika's good.”
Billy studies her.
BILLY: “Very.”
Rhea glances toward the office.
RHEA: “But they're protecting something.”
Billy doesn't answer.
Rhea smiles faintly.
RHEA: “See?”
She taps the side of her head.
RHEA: “I do listen.”
Billy shakes his head.
BILLY: “That's what worries me.”
Rhea disappears down the staircase.
Billy remains behind.
After a moment, he looks toward the shadows where she had been hiding.
Then toward the office.
His expression grows more serious.
Below, somewhere inside the darkened gym—
A barbell crashes back onto its rack.
Dominik Rask is still training.
Billy looks down toward the sound.
Then toward the stairway Rhea just descended.
Two people watching.
For very different reasons.
And September hasn't even begun in earnest.
