Ollie's Observations 031

House Show Recaps — Week of August 31st to September 6th

By Oliver Grant

Opening

The final week of Scrooge Conquers Europe brought NPCW’s month-long tour to its last two cities. The Mythic Division completed its Spanish itinerary in Valencia, while the Polar Division closed the Scandinavian side of the tour in Gothenburg, Sweden. After weeks of two-night pairings, rematches and adjustments, these final cards offered one last opportunity for wrestlers to leave Europe with something more useful than a single result.

Valencia produced considerably more consistency. Alice defeated Lady Isolde Blackthorne twice, Mordred completed a two-match sweep over Lion, and the King’s Collectors took both meetings from the Gods of War. John Henry followed a first-night victory over Taro Okami with a 30-minute draw, while the Merry Band turned its own opening-night draw against the Monster Bash Enforcers into a pinfall victory.

Gothenburg was less settled. Mrs. Claus and Grizelda split their matches. Blitzen and Donner exchanged victories with the Howlers. The Reindeer Coalition and the pairing of Knecht Ruprecht and Belsnickel did the same. Ironfang was the exception, defeating Tobias Snake twice over 52 total minutes.

The Polar main events produced another important distinction. Jack Frost defeated Jasper Fang after 25 minutes on the opening night, then spent the full 30-minute limit trying unsuccessfully to repeat it. Frost therefore finished the pairing unbeaten, but Fang ensured that the final match of the tour ended without a winner.

That made the last stop an appropriate conclusion to the tour. Some wrestlers confirmed what earlier results suggested. Others used one final rematch to change the evidence before everyone headed home.

Featured Match Observation

Mordred vs Lion

Mordred and Lion needed 26 minutes to settle Valencia’s first main event, and the match worked because neither wrestler was able to establish a permanent advantage until the closing stretch.

Lion created the first significant attack with the Lion’s Leap in the third minute. Mordred answered immediately afterward by reversing the Lion’s Roar into the Downward Spiral.

That set the pattern.

Mordred’s Clotheslines, Swinging Neckbreaker and Vertical Suplexes repeatedly met Lion’s Brainbuster, Bodyslams and Main Event Neckbreaker. Neither man produced an early pin because both were still able to answer whatever the other established.

Lion also tested Mordred through submissions.

He applied the Full Nelson in the seventh minute, returned to it in the 21st and used it once more in the 24th. Mordred survived all three applications.

The first serious pinning opportunity belonged to Lion.

His Main Event Neckbreaker earned a two-count in the 16th minute. Mordred escaped and immediately began rebuilding through the Swinging Neckbreaker, Vertical Suplex and Sitout Powerbomb.

Lion remained dangerous. He answered the Powerbomb with the Tornado Enzuigiri and continued using the Full Nelson and Lion’s Roar as the match moved beyond 20 minutes.

Mordred finally created his own pin attempt after the Spear in the 26th.

There was no second attempt.

Lion stayed down for three.

What it showed: Lion challenged Mordred with several different forms of offense and created the first meaningful near fall, but Mordred never allowed one attack to become decisive. His ability to survive Lion’s repeated Full Nelsons left him enough room to produce the one finishing opportunity he needed.

Featured Match Observation

King’s Collectors vs Gods of War

The King’s Collectors had already won the opening match against the Gods of War, but Night 2 gave Brute Bailiff and Ledger Knight a chance to produce a victory that did not depend upon Prince John handing them a foreign object.

The Gods of War attacked Ledger Knight early through several double-team stretches.

Ares and Mars combined the Bearhug, Elbow Drop, Lariat and Over-the-Shoulder Backbreaker between the third and sixth minutes. Ledger continued responding with the Inverted Figure-Four Leglock and Shin Breaker, keeping the match from becoming one-sided.

Mars created the first pinning opportunity after a Samoan Drop in the eighth minute.

Ledger Knight made the save for Brute Bailiff.

The middle portion became a test of which team could maintain its tandem offense longer.

Ares and Mars attacked Bailiff together in the 13th and 14th minutes, but Bailiff remained active through the Saito Suplex, Gory Special and Hammer Fist Barrage.

The Collectors finally produced their best sustained sequence beginning in the 17th minute.

Bailiff and Ledger worked Mars for three rounds, combining the Short Arm Lariat, Hammerlock, Cradle DDT and Shin Breaker. The Gods of War answered with another three-round attack beginning in the 20th.

Neither stretch produced an immediate finish.

Ares came closest in the 26th minute when a Knee Lift earned him a two-count against Bailiff.

Ledger Knight then became the deciding wrestler.

He returned to the Inverted Figure-Four Leglock in the 27th minute, neutralized Ares’ Gorilla Slam one minute later and applied the hold again in the 29th.

Ares submitted.

What it showed: The first victory established that the King’s Collectors could win the matchup. The second provided the stronger evidence. Ledger Knight survived the Gods of War’s tandem offense, kept returning to the leg and eventually produced a submission without the direct foreign-object finish that had decided Night 1.

Main Event – Jasper Fang vs Jack Frost

Featured Match Observation

Jasper Fang vs Jack Frost

Jack Frost and Jasper Fang gave Gothenburg a 25-minute main event in which Frost gradually turned repeated submission pressure into a pinfall victory.

Frost introduced the Frostbite Clutch in the opening minute. Fang escaped and answered through the Overhead Belly-to-Belly Suplex and Gutwrench Suplex, but Frost soon began controlling the pace with the Snowdrift Scissors and Icy Embrace.

Grinch Heyman attempted to interfere in the fifth minute.

Fang neutralized the mobile-phone attack.

Two minutes later, Heyman tried again. This time the interference connected and Frost earned the first two-count of the match.

Fang recovered well.

Between the eighth and 14th minutes, he established the Bloodfang Bomb, Full Hammerlock, Gutwrench Suplex and Double Leg Dive. The last of those produced his first pin attempt, but Frost escaped at two.

Frost continued returning to the Frostbite Clutch rather than abandoning it.

He applied the hold again in the 13th and 18th minutes. Fang refused to submit each time.

That forced Frost to broaden the finishing attack.

Fang earned another cover in the 19th minute, but Frost escaped at one. Heyman then interfered again by choking Fang with a cord, and Frost began building toward the Arctic Blast.

The Ice Storm produced a two-count in the 23rd minute.

Frost followed with consecutive Arctic Blasts over the next two rounds.

The second finally kept Fang down.

What it showed: Frost had assistance, but Fang repeatedly survived both the interference and Frost’s primary submission hold. Frost ultimately won because he changed the route to the finish, moving from the Frostbite Clutch to the Ice Storm and repeated Arctic Blasts when Fang proved he would not submit.

Featured Match Observation

Jasper Fang vs Jack Frost

The final main event of the European tour lasted five minutes longer than the first meeting and produced no winner, but it still told us something important about how Jasper Fang changed the matchup.

Frost immediately attempted to recreate Night 1.

The Ice Storm produced a two-count in the opening minute, and Frost returned to the Frostbite Clutch in the fourth.

Fang survived again.

The difference was that Frost had more alternatives ready this time. He introduced Chill Out in the sixth minute and Winter’s Wrath in the ninth, forcing Fang to defend against another submission rather than simply prepare for the Cobra Clutch.

Fang responded with the Wolf’s Pounce and Gutwrench Suplex before earning a two-count of his own in the 13th minute.

Grinch Heyman then stole one of Fang’s possessions, leaving Fang defending through four rounds.

Frost made use of it.

Winter’s Wrath, the Arctic Blast and consecutive Icy Edges kept Fang under pressure from the 15th through 19th minutes. Frost earned two-counts in the 17th and 19th, but Fang continued escaping.

Fang finally regained control after neutralizing another Frostbite Clutch in the 20th.

A Gutwrench Suplex produced another two-count in the 21st, followed by the Turnbuckle attack and consecutive Double Leg Dives.

Frost responded with increasingly frequent pin attempts.

The Arctic Blast produced covers in the 25th and 26th minutes. Winter’s Wrath failed to force a submission in the 27th. The Ice Storm produced additional one-counts in the 28th and 30th.

Fang was still there when the bell sounded.

What it showed: Frost created considerably more finishing opportunities, but Fang corrected the one thing that mattered most after Night 1: he stopped Frost from converting pressure into the final three-count. The draw leaves Frost with the better two-night record, but Fang ended the tour by surviving everything that had beaten him the night before.

Closing

Valencia belonged largely to wrestlers who established an advantage on Night 1 and kept it.

Alice completed a sweep over Lady Isolde Blackthorne.

The first match lasted 19 minutes and included substantial interference from Prince John. Isolde earned two pin attempts after his involvement, but Alice survived and eventually pinned her with the Rabbit Hole DDT.

The rematch lasted 28 minutes.

This time Alice created the larger number of finishing opportunities. Wonderland’s End produced early covers, and the Rabbit Hole DDT generated a two-count in the 23rd minute.

Prince John’s influence also changed considerably. Rather than creating successful openings for Isolde, he accidentally struck his own protégé repeatedly between the 19th and 21st minutes.

Alice eventually finished with the Double Kneedrop.

The sweep belongs to Alice, and the second victory was the more sustained of the two.

The Merry Band took longer to establish its advantage over the Monster Bash Enforcers.

Friar Tuck and Little John wrestled Kong and Ogre to the full 30-minute limit on Night 1. Both teams created late covers, and Friar Tuck had to save Little John after Ogre’s Backslam in the 26th minute. Little John then had his own pin attempt broken up by Ogre in the 29th.

One minute later, time expired.

The rematch was more efficient.

Little John created a two-count in the seventh minute and another in the 14th, both requiring saves. Ogre answered with his own cover in the 16th.

Little John finally landed the Backbreaker in the 17th and completed the pin.

A draw followed by a direct victory gave the Merry Band one of Valencia’s more useful second-night improvements.

The King’s Collectors produced another sweep, although the finishes were very different.

Brute Bailiff pinned Mars after 19 minutes on Night 1, but Prince John’s foreign object directly created the winning opportunity.

Night 2 went 29 minutes.

The Gods of War produced several sustained double-team stretches and Ares earned a late two-count, but Ledger Knight repeatedly attacked the leg before submitting Ares with the Inverted Figure-Four.

The second victory was the stronger measure of the team.

John Henry finished Valencia 1–0–1 against Taro Okami.

The opener lasted 18 minutes. Henry used the Steel Driver to create a one-count in the 17th before immediately returning to the same move and securing the pin one minute later.

Taro substantially improved in the rematch.

He survived another Steel Driver in the ninth minute and began creating pressure through the Standing Guillotine, Arm Triangle, Lunar Fang and repeated Knee Strikes.

Henry still created a two-count after the Steel Driver in the 20th, but Taro remained active through the final ten minutes.

The final exchange ended with Taro applying the Hunter’s Lock as time expired.

Henry therefore won the series, but Taro prevented the first result from becoming a sweep.

Mordred produced Valencia’s other complete singles sweep.

Lion took Mordred to 26 minutes on the first night and produced the opening near fall with the Main Event Neckbreaker.

Mordred required only one cover to win, finishing with the Spear.

The rematch was shorter.

Mordred created pin attempts in the tenth and 14th minutes before finally pinning Lion with the Dropkick in the 18th.

Lion remained competitive through the Brainbuster, Lion’s Leap and Full Nelson, but Mordred created considerably more finishing pressure on Night 2.

Gothenburg produced far fewer definitive pairings.

Mrs. Claus defeated Grizelda by count-out after only nine minutes on Night 1. The finish came when Mrs. Claus threw Grizelda to the floor and Grizelda failed to return before ten.

Grizelda answered properly the next night.

The rematch lasted 20 minutes and gave both women time to establish submissions and pin attempts. Mrs. Claus applied the Claus Clutch and later tried the Claus Crunch, while Grizelda returned to the Boston Crab and Witch’s Spike.

The Enchanted Ending finally gave Grizelda the pin.

That left the series 1–1, with Grizelda owning the more complete victory.

Blitzen and Donner also split with the Howlers.

Night 1 lasted only seven minutes and ended when Howler #1 was counted out after Donner sent him through the ropes.

The rematch provided the real test.

Both teams worked through multiple tandem sequences over 22 minutes. The Howlers created consecutive near falls in the 11th and 12th minutes, while Blitzen and Donner produced their own sustained double-team stretch beginning in the 16th.

The Wolf Pack became increasingly involved late.

Howler #1 finally pinned Donner with the Bionic Elbow.

The result equalized the series, though the manager involvement kept the second finish from being entirely clean.

The Reindeer Coalition and Knecht Ruprecht and Belsnickel also divided their matches.

Prancer pinned Knecht Ruprecht with the Pull the Reigns Clothesline after 14 minutes on Night 1.

The rematch lasted the same amount of time but reversed the result.

Belsnickel and Knecht began producing more coordinated offense early, and Belsnickel earned a two-count with Ringing the Bell in the fourth minute.

The Coalition answered through several double-team sequences of its own, but Belsnickel gradually found the finish.

Two consecutive Coal Crushers in the 13th and 14th minutes gave him the pin on Prancer.

Neither team leaves Gothenburg with a two-night advantage.

Ironfang was the exception.

He defeated Tobias Snake twice.

The first match lasted 25 minutes. The Wolf Pack interfered repeatedly, and Ironfang required six pin attempts before the Overhead Belly-to-Belly Suplex finally completed the fall.

Tobias made the rematch more competitive offensively.

He landed the Double Underhook Superplex several times, returned repeatedly to the Lariat and Snap DDT, and survived four more Ironfang pin attempts.

Ironfang nevertheless remained the wrestler consistently creating finishing pressure.

A Vertical Suplex in the 27th minute completed the sweep.

Across 52 minutes, Tobias showed resilience. Ironfang showed repeatable control.

The final pairing of the tour remained less settled.

Jack Frost defeated Jasper Fang in 25 minutes on Night 1 after surviving two Fang pin attempts and producing several of his own.

The rematch lasted the full 30.

Frost again generated the greater number of near falls and repeatedly applied Winter’s Wrath, but Fang survived every attempt.

The final bell left Frost with a win and a draw.

That makes him the statistical winner of the pairing, but not an uncontested one.

And that is where Scrooge Conquers Europe ends.

Valencia gave Alice, the King’s Collectors and Mordred complete sweeps, while the Merry Band and John Henry finished unbeaten.

Gothenburg belonged most clearly to Ironfang, the only wrestler on the Polar card to win both nights. Jack Frost also finished unbeaten, but Jasper Fang denied him the sweep in the final match.

For five weeks, the European tour asked the same question twice in every city: what happens when the opponent gets another night to solve you?

Sometimes the first answer held.

Sometimes the rematch changed everything.

That was the value of the tour.

House shows don’t crown champions—but they do reveal who’s ready.
